The mission of the Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM) is to ensure the musical rights of the Afghan people, transforming lives and communities through comprehensive music education. The Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM) is unique as the country's only music school, integrating Afghan and Western musical traditions. It focuses on educating marginalized youth, especially girls and orphans, and plays a crucial role in cultural preservation and peace building in Afghanistan.

The ANIM is actively reestablishing itself in exile in Portugal. Having toured more than 50 countries, ANIM has graced prestigious stages such as the Sydney Opera House, the Southbank Centre, Carnegie Hall (twice), and venues in Tajikistan. These performances have showcased the resilience and talent of Afghan musicians on a global scale. ANIM has revived several key ensembles, including the Afghan Youth Orchestra, Zohra Orchestra, Qawwali, Tarana (traditional ensemble), and Azada (traditional ensemble). The institute also offers classes in sitar, rubab, conducting, and Hindustani music theory, ensuring a comprehensive musical education that preserves and promotes Afghan cultural heritage. ANIM’s current activities extend beyond music education and performance.

The institute is a strong advocate for the artistic rights of the Afghan people and gender equality. By providing a platform for marginalized groups, particularly girls and women, ANIM promotes social change and intercultural dialogue. Its work in Portugal aims to continue these efforts, fostering a global understanding of Afghan music and culture while supporting the artistic aspirations of Afghan youth in exile.
