The Institute’s curriculum is holistic, where students take classes not only in music theory, production, songwriting, and technology, but in business, legal, writing, history, and emergent media as well. As an industry-based super program, we have embedded professional development as a pathway for each student with mandatory internships. In order to graduate successfully, students are required to present their business plan to industry professionals who offer help and assistance with exit strategy from the Institute and help launch our students’ careers in the business of music and entertainment.

The Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music was founded by the late music icon Clive Davis in 2003 and is the only undergraduate four-year program that awards students with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.

Combining an intensive, conservatory experience with the practicality of a music, business, and liberal arts curriculum, the McDuffie Center for Strings prepares the exceptional musician for success. McDuffie’s distinguished faculty artists are dedicated to the development of young artists pursuing personal and musical excellence through four years of one-on-one mentorships. Through Mercer courses, McDuffie encourages its young musicians to engage with all aspects of the 21st century performing-arts world. This present environment is challenging to navigate, yet bursting with opportunity for the imaginative, entrepreneurial artist—precisely the type of performer on faculty at McDuffie.

Founded as a special institute within Mercer University’s Townsend School of Music, the McDuffie Center for Strings is limited to 26 students: twelve violinists, six violists, six cellists and two bassists. All accepted students receive a full-tuition scholarship to study with an unparalleled faculty of international performing artists.
