The Crane School of Music cultivates an eclectic, accessible, dedicated community of flexible musicians, scholars, principled practitioners, and pedagogues in which diversity of process and perspective, collaboration, and creative risk-taking are valued and where all are prepared and emboldened to a pursue a professional life of citizenship, artistry, and innovative leadership. Throughout Crane's 138-year history the school's mission has been to educate music teachers with an emphasis on excellence in performance. Over the years, that mission has expanded to include degrees in performance, music business, composition, and music theory and history, as well as programs in other areas.

The Crane School of Music, SUNY Potsdam, is an undergraduate-focused music school of about 450 students on a liberal arts campus. Crane students work with attentive overwhelmingly full-time faculty. Students at Crane can choose from a wide variety of programs and majors.

Students in each major work closely with faculty and staff at Crane and SUNY Potsdam's Career Services Office in formulating their post-graduation plans. Crane alumni include thousands of educators, performers, composers, researchers, leaders in music industry, and musicians of renown, a network of graduates who can be found throughout North America and around the world.
