Ravenna Festival
Ravenna Festival
FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS
The main theme of this year's Festival is "Sweet color of the Oriental sapphire," a quote from Dante's Commedia. The poet's idea of the East shared many traits of Byzantine Ravenna: It is likely that, when Dante described the sky, he had the starry mosaics of the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia in mind. So whilst this year's theme revels in Ravenna's history, it will be matched by a more disturbing image, which marks a distance to that fabulous East. The Festival also looks at the threats Dante's Earthly Paradise is now witnessing as environmentalism becomes one of our greatest challenges. The 2020 program opens with Koyaanisqatsi, accompanied live by the Philip Glass Ensemble. This year's events also include the acclaimed production Carmina Burana by Fura dels Baus. Riccardo Muti leads two concerts with his Cherubini Orchestra, Valery Gergiev conducts a double event with the Mariinsky Orchestra, and Ivan Fischer leads the Budapest Festival Orchestra. The 100Cellos celebrate their instrument for a week of events.

The 36th Sun Valley Music Festival commemorates the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth with orchestral performances, chamber music recitals, and guest lectures, all free to the public. On opening night, pianist Orion Weiss performs Beethoven's Emperor Concerto, followed by his Piano Sonata No. 23, Appassionata, on July 30. Highlights include performances by pianist Daniil Trifonov and violinist Leila Josefowicz; Kevin Puts's new triple concerto, a Festival co-commission, with the string trio Time for Three. Some orchestral programs juxtapose the old and the new, such as Jennifer Higdon's blue cathedral with Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances, or Missy Mazzoli's These Worlds in Us with Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 3, or Debussy's La Mer alongside Mozart's Clarinet Concerto. Amarillo Symphony Music Director Jacomo Bairos conducts a pops concert with The Villalobos Brothers; Alasdair Neale leads Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique to close the season.

Teatro Nuovo
Teatro Nuovo
FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS
Will Crutchfield's Teatro Nuovo presents semi-staged productions of Rossini's Maometto Secondo and the American premiere of Il Vero Omaggio at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Frederick P. Rose Hall in Manhattan. Aleks Romano, Alina Tamborini, Hannah Ludwig, Enrique Guzmán, Hans Tashjian, and other rising, young, Bel Canto talents star in these performances following weeks of intensive training led by Crutchfield.
Crutchfield and Associate Artistic Director Jakob Lehmann share musical leadership. In the company's third summer, it will again showcase the critically-acclaimed Teatro Nuovo Orchestra, a hand-picked ensemble hailed as "transformative" (The Wall Street Journal) in these American presentations of 19th century operas on period instruments.
Teatro Nuovo continues the work of the widely-heralded Bel Canto at Caramoor training program. Its festival also offers additional daily vocal and instrumental concerts and a full range of master class, lecture, and panel-discussion events.

Verbier Festival
Verbier Festival
FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS
The Verbier Festival, now in its 27th year, returns for 17 days of concerts, masterclasses, talks and education events in the picturesque setting of the Swiss Alps (July 17-August 2). 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Beethoven, and the Festival pays tribute to him with his works, influences and those he has inspired. More than 90 world-class artists come together for over 60 mainstage concerts across the Festival.
The Festival's key mission is to encourage encounters between great musicians and young aspiring artists from around the world. Audiences witness these unique encounters and partnerships through the Festival's programme of concerts set in the unrivalled surroundings of Verbier, with its two main venues, the Salle des Combins and Église de Verbier. The 2020 programme includes over 90 leading international artists who will perform solo, chamber and orchestral concerts alongside the next generation of artists in the Verbier Festival Academy, Verbier Festival Orchestra and Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra. Succeeding the celebrations of its quarter century, the 2019 edition resulted in positive revenue and ticket sales, despite another major event taking place during the same time (Feast of Winegrowers). The Festival continues to reinforce its place in the cultural landscape as an unmissable event for audiences worldwide.
Alongside the big names such as Evgeny Kissin, Mischa Maisky, Denis Matsuev, Mikhail Pletnev and Pinchas Zukerman, legends of classical music are making their long-awaited return to the Festival after more than five years of absence: Martha Argerich, Nelson Freire, Stephen Kovacevich and René Pape.
