ABOUT THIS COMPETITION
Established in 2003 by the Northwestern University Bienen School of Music, the Michael Ludwig Nemmers Prize in Music Composition honors classical composers of outstanding achievement. The winner receives $100,000 and is expected to participate in two nonconsecutive weeks of residency at the Bienen School.

ELIGIBILITY
The Michael Ludwig Nemmers in Music Composition will be awarded to a classical music composer who shows the highest level achievement in a body of work and a unique creativity. Composers must be nominated, preferably by recognized authorities in the field of classical music, such as prominent artists, critics, scholars, or administrators, via a letter to the Selection Committee. The Prize is international in focus and therefore open to any classical composer without regard to citizenship or institutional affiliation. Only living composers may be nominated. The names of the nominators will not be made public; however, anonymous nominations will not be accepted. Nominators may nominate any number of candidates. Former or present members of the Northwestern University faculty and employees of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra are not eligible for this prize. Nominations may be submitted by email. Email submissions must be emailed from the nominator's professional affiliation. The recipient is expected to participate in two nonconsecutive weeks of residency at the Bienen School of Music interacting with students and faculty.

PianoArts semifinalists perform solo recitals and partner with a Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra violinist or cellist to rehearse and perform duo recitals. They speak about music and rehearse their presentations with a speaking coach. Finalists perform complete concertos with the MSO. Numerous prizes include PianoArts Fellowships and performances for diverse audiences.

Since 2006, The Plowman Chamber Music Competition (Plowman) has provided an opportunity for aspiring chamber musicians to perform live in front of an audience and a panel of judges for cash awards totaling over $10,000, including $5,000 Grand Prize. See website for more details.

Open to instrumental ensembles of three to six players. Members must be interested in, or already pursuing a career in music. Ensembles with management as of March 2023 are not eligible. The ensemble may not have more than one piano. Piano is also the only keyboard instrument eligible in the competition. The Plowman Chamber Music Competition is unable to accommodate ensembles that require more than five minutes to set-up and tear-down time (i.e., numerous percussion instruments, complex electronic set-ups, etc.). The ensemble is responsible for arranging for, and/or bringing their own instruments and music.
