Quintet of the Americas will present Winds of Change, June 10 @ 12 noon at Rockaway Institute for Sustainable Environment (RISE - Firehouse 59), 58-03 Rockaway Beach Blvd., in Rockaway Park, Queens, NY.

Quintet of the Americas will present this concert of music related to the environment and global warming, including the World Premieres of Bruce Odland’s World Winds and Kevin James’s Rockaway Beach - Winter 2017, both commissioned by the Quintet in response to Hurricane Sandy and the concerns of the people living in the Rockaways.

Bruce Odland has devised a musical game for the Quintet and audience to react to the Earth's air currents in real time as projected visually so everyone can be involved.

Kevin James has recorded samples of sounds collected in the Rockaways including bird songs, surf, jets from JFK, and underwater sounds. He has combined these with musical parts for the quintet in an evocative piece "Rockaway Beach - Winter 2017". Mr. James worked in collaboration with the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance and with students in their Shore Corps program who assisted in the collection of the field recordings.

Other repertoire includes nature-themed music by Scott Joplin, David Dzubay, Eric Ewazen, Jose Barros, Queens composer James Cohn, Duke Ellington, William Grant Still and Zquinha de Abreu, along with readings from Ralph Waldo Emerson.

This event is free. For more information, call 718-230-5189 or visit http://www.quintet.org/concerts.html. These concerts are ADA accessible. For MTA transportation information, visit http://tripplanner.mta.info/_start.aspx.
