The Nytch and Vali pieces were commissioned by the CDSQ. The commission of Reza Vali’s Raak (Calligraphy No. 15) was made possible by the Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Program, with generous funding provided by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Chamber Music America Endowment Fund.

Reza Vali’s Raak (Calligraphy No. 15) The compositional material of the work is derived from the Persian Dastgâh-Maghâm system and based on a Persian mode called Raak which means “Raga” in Persian language. Reza Vali, born in Ghazvin, Persia (Iran), began his music studies at the Conservatory of Music in Tehran. After graduating from the Academy of Music, he moved to the United States and continued his studies at the University of Pittsburgh, receiving his Ph.D. in music theory and composition in 1985. Mr. Vali has been a faculty member of the School of Music at Carnegie Mellon University since 1988.

Jeffrey Nytch’s “Seize the Sun: Fantasy on Icarus” reimagines the classic Icarus story not as a cautionary tale, but rather a celebration of the human spirit of aspiration, of reaching beyond our limitations to embrace new discoveries. Dedicated to the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting, the piece also celebrates rebirth and renewed hope in the face of heartbreak and disaster. Jeffrey Nytch enjoys a diverse career as a composer, educator, author, and performer. His works have been performed throughout the U.S. and Europe by such artists as Richard Stoltzman, the Seattle Symphony, NY Chamber Symphony, Colorado Symphony, the Ahn Trio, and many others. Nytch is an Associate Professor at The University of Colorado-Boulder, where he directs the Entrepreneurship Center for Music.
