Pianist Raffi Besalyan Performs at Max M. Fisher Music Center for Pro Musica of Detroit on October 10th

Renowned Armenian-American pianist Raffi Besalyan will make his Detroit recital debut for Pro Musica of Detroit at the Max M. Fisher Music Center, 3711 Woodward Ave., Detroit, Michigan, on Friday, October 10, 2014, at 8:30 p.m. In addition to his concert, Dr. Besalyan will also conduct a master class for students at the Detroit School of Arts during his visit.

Raffi Besalyan will commence the 88th Pro Musica Concert Season with an exciting and distinctive program that will feature Rachmaninoff, Gershwin, Kapustin, Chopin, Liszt, and Armenian composers Komitas, Baghdassarian and Babajanian. An Afterglow reception will follow in the Orchestra Hall Atrium where concert-goers will have the opportunity to meet Dr. Besalyan and enjoy refreshments. This performance will continue Pro Musica of Detroit’s long-standing tradition of featuring concert performances with virtuosic talents from the world of classical music. Raffi Besalyan has established an international reputation as a magnetic and passionate performer. He has been hailed as “a true heir of the mainstream of Russian pianism, like Horowitz” (CHOPIN Magazine, Japan), “one of the most outstanding pianists to emerge from Armenia” and “a master of his art” (The Record Geijutsu Magazine, Japan), “a keyboard phenomenon that needs to be heard by everyone interested in pianists and the piano” (Fanfare Magazine), and “a formidable pianist with a commanding presence and rich interpretive gifts” (American Record Guide).

In recent years, Raffi Besalyan has received notable recognition as a recording artist. Released in 2012, his critically acclaimed debut solo album, “Dance, Drama, Decadence” (IMC Music, Japan), received The Record Geijutsu’s prestigious Jun-Tokusen Award (Exclusive Recommendation) and rave reviews from The Record Geijutsu Magazine, Fanfare Magazine, American Record Guide, Mainichi Newspaper, and others. This CD includes works by Rachmaninoff, Liszt, Ravel, Baghdassarian and Komitas and is available through Amazon.com and iTunes. His latest recording is scheduled for release in 2015 by GRAMMY® Award-winning record label Sono Luminus. The new solo album will feature works by Rachmaninoff and the Armenian composer Babajanian.

Throughout his successful performance career, Raffi Besalyan has toured in North and South America, Europe, Russia, and Asia as a recitalist, orchestral soloist and chamber musician. His appearances have been applauded in such prominent venues as Carnegie Hall and Merkin Hall (New York City), Kennedy Center (Washington D.C.), Orchestra Hall (Chicago), Izumi Hall and Phoenix Hall (Osaka, Japan), and Rachmaninoff Hall and Small Hall (Moscow, Russia). Dr. Besalyan is a specialist in Russian piano music and extensively concertizes and instructs master classes in the U.S. and abroad. He also tours in Japan as a performer and master class clinician under the management of IMC Music, Tokyo.

A native of Yerevan, Armenia, Raffi Besalyan studied at the Tchaikovsky Special Music School for Gifted Children. He holds a doctorate from Yerevan State Conservatory in Armenia, as well as degrees from Rowan University in New Jersey and the Manhattan School of Music in New York. A former faculty member of Rowan University and University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Dr. Besalyan joined the faculty at Georgia State University in Atlanta in August 2014 where he is currently an Assistant Professor of Piano Performance.
