The Orchestra of the League of Composers Presents Works by Clement, Bielewa, Lerdahl and Pärt on May 25 at Columbia University’s Miller Theater

New York, NY – The Orchestra of the League of Composers, Louis Karchin, Music Director, and David Fulmer, conductor, will present works by Clement, Bielewa, Lerdahl and Pärt on Thursday, May 25 at 7:30 PM at Miller Theatre at Columbia University, 2960 Broadway, New York, NY.
Repertoire will be Sheree Clement’s Stories I Cannot Tell You (World Premiere, commissioned by the League/ISCM), Lisa Bielawa’s Start (Piano Concerto), with Andrew Armstrong, soloist, Fred Lerdahl’s Time and Again (NY Premiere) and Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten.
Sheree Clement writes about her piece, “'Stories I Cannot Tell You' is in three movements of approximately the same length that are roughly, fast - slow – fast, played without pause… Chunks of this music ‘landed on me’ as I drove home to New York City on I-95. So much so, that I had to pull over and write it out – it was too distracting to keep driving…”

The League of Composers/ISCM seeks to have “new music” (20th and 21st-century music) play a more prominent role and obtain a more appreciated place in the lives of the concert music-loving public. The League’s mission is to engage audiences by presenting performances of new music of the highest caliber written by emerging and established living composers in the context of 20th and 21st-century masterpieces.
The League draws on a remarkably rich history, including such groundbreaking premieres as Schönberg’s Die Glückliche Hand, Béla Bartók’s Village Scenes, Samuel Barber’s Piano Sonata and Anton Webern’s Symphony for Chamber Orchestra. The League also sponsored the American premiere of Igor Stravinsky’s ballet Le Sacre du Printemps, many pieces by Aaron Copland, György Ligeti’s Horn Trio, Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Harlequin, and many works by former honorary Board Co-Chairs Elliott Carter and Milton Babbitt.
Sheree Clement’s works have been performed by the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, the Atlantic String Quartet, the Canyonlands Ensemble (Salt Lake City), Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston, and the Washington Square Contemporary Music Ensemble. She’s written for everything from solo piano to string quartet, and 4 track synthesized audio to orchestra. Among her awards are The Goddard Lieberson Award from the American Academy and Institute of Arts & Letters and a Fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. Her New York credits include concerts at Merkin Hall, Carnegie Recital Hall, and Miller Theatre.
