NEW YORK, NY (DECEMBER 5, 2016) — Live From Lincoln Center presents Grammy Award–winning violinist Joshua Bell in a performance with the Chamber Orchestra of Havana and some of Cuba’s most renowned artists, as well as special guest Dave Matthews. This marks the U.S. debut of the Chamber Orchestra of Havana, conducted by Daiana García. Live From Lincoln Center’s Joshua Bell: Seasons of Cuba airs nationally as part of the PBS Arts Fall Festival on Friday, December 16, 2016 (check local listings).
Earlier this year, the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities asked Joshua Bell to be a member of the first official government-to-government bilateral initiative in the wake of President Obama’s historic trip to Cuba. The mission was to extend a hand of friendship to the Cuban people through the universal language of the arts. Upon his return to the United States, Bell expressed the desire to bring the Chamber Orchestra of Havana to the states and approached Live From Lincoln Center in order to continue the important artistic dialogue initiated overseas. The concert that stemmed from these efforts includes the Presto movement from "Summer” from Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons and "Summer" from Ástor Piazzolla’s The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires performed by Joshua Bell and the Chamber Orchestra of Havana, which is composed of some of Cuba’s most accomplished classical musicians. The concert also highlights traditional and contemporary music written and performed by acclaimed Cuban artists, their collaborations building a bridge between Cubans and American artists in a new landscape of cultural diplomacy Joining Joshua Bell and the orchestra are singer-songwriter Carlos Varela (recently profiled in the HBO documentary The Poet of Havana), pianist/composer Aldo López-Gavilán, and soprano Larisa Martínez, all of whom participated in the historic trip in April. Pianist Jorge Gómez, bassist Julio González Ochoa, pianist Orlando Alonso, percussionist Ruy Adrián López-Nussa, drummer Yissy Garciá Calzadilla, and saxophonist Yosvany Terry are also featured in the concert.
Special guest Dave Matthews, who was also a member of the delegation to Cuba, performs several of his own songs in collaboration with Joshua Bell and the Chamber Orchestra of Havana. He performs with Carlos Varela, as well. The live concert event and television broadcast are produced and directed by multiple Emmy Award winner Andrew C. Wilk, Executive Producer of Live From Lincoln Center. It was taped Tuesday, November 1, 2016, in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall.
ABOUT JOSHUA BELL: Grammy Award–winning violinist Joshua Bell, often referred to as “the poet of the violin,” commands the stage as a soloist, recording artist, and conductor and has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious venues, from 33 appearances at Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House, the Hollywood Bowl, and London’s Royal Albert Hall. He’s collaborated with A-listers outside the classical arena, including Josh Groban, Sting, Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, Plácido Domingo, Alison Krauss, and now, Dave Matthews. Named Music Director of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields in 2011, Bell is the first person to hold this post since Sir Neville Marriner formed the orchestra in 1958.
Bell received his first violin at age four and at 14 performed with Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra. At 17 he made his Carnegie Hall debut and his first recording at 18 on the Decca Label. He’s recorded numerous movie soundtracks, including the Oscar-winning score for The Red Violin, among more than 40 CDs garnering Grammy, Mercury, Gramophone, and Echo Klassik Awards.
Bell has received many accolades, including the Paul Newman Award from Arts Horizons; recognition from the New York Chapter of The Recording Academy; and the Instrumentalist of the Year Award by Musical America in 2010. He also received the Humanitarian Award from Seton Hall University, the Academy of Achievement Award, The Avery Fisher Prize, and was honored by Education Through Music. Bell was inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame and Billboard magazine named him Classical Artist of the Year.
Bell’s most recent recording, For the Love of Brahms, features Bell with cellist Steven Isserlis, the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, and pianist Jeremy Denk. Critics concur that Bell’s performance stirs souls, with the New York Times declaring, “Mr. Bell stands in no one’s shadow.”
ABOUT ANDREW C. WILK, Executive Producer, Live From Lincoln Center Andrew C. Wilk is a multiple Emmy Award–winning producer and director whose career has encompassed leading roles in many areas of commercial and educational content. Since his arrival at Lincoln Center in 2011, he has served as Executive Producer of Live From Lincoln Center episodes ranging from classical music to dance to theater. Prior to his work at Lincoln Center, Wilk served as Chief Creative Officer at Sony Music Entertainment, where he oversaw all visual content for Sony’s label groups and spearheaded Sony’s digital expansion. He also served as Founding Programmer and Executive Vice President of Programming and Production for the National Geographic Channel, where he launched the channel and developed its initial programming and scheduled and commissioned new programs, including specials with PBS and NBC. Wilk has won five Emmy Awards and received 15 nominations. Over the course of his career, he has produced or directed more than 1,000 television shows, ranging from children’s programming to news to commercial entertainment, in addition to continuing his work as a conductor of live music concerts.
