LA Master Chorale Launches Major New Initiative Championing LA-Based Composers

October 1, 2015 | By Libby Huebner
Recognizing Los Angeles as a hotbed for some of the most interesting, creative and exciting composers writing for voice today, the Los Angeles Master Chorale and Artistic Director Grant Gershon announce “Made in L.A.,” a multi-year initiative championing a new generation of L.A.-based composers who are both established and rising stars in the choral music genre. The L.A.-centric initiative kicks off with “Composers Live!,” a free event featuring multimedia performances and conversation with six leading composers whose impact is being felt throughout the country – Filipino-American Nilo Alcala, Emmy Award-winning House of Cards composer Jeff Beal, “textpainter” Matthew Brown, former LAMC Composer in Residence Shawn Kirchner, “vocal shape-shifter” Moira Smiley and Dale Trumbore, noted for setting music to poems and prose of living authors – on Thursday, October 15, 2015, 7:30 pm, at the AT&T Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. Presented in partnership with Classical KUSC 91.5 FM and moderated by KUSC’s Brian Lauritzen and Gershon, the event provides a fascinating behind-the-scenes look into the creativity of these choral composers and what is driving the region’s choral wellspring, combined with musical performances by the Los Angeles Master Chorale and the composers themselves.

“Our goal with the ‘Made in L.A.’ initiative is to nurture the city’s incredibly talented composers and align the LA Master Chorale with the forefront of this choral renaissance,” says Gershon. “This behind-the-scenes event, ‘Composers Live!,’ provides our audience a unique look into our city’s deep pool of creative choral talent and insights into how the city has shaped these composers as artists. The broader ‘Made in L.A.’ initiative is also an integral part of the Chorale’s long-range strategic plan, informing not only the scope of music the Chorale will present in seasons to come but also our approach to how we present performances using multi-media elements or even creating semi-staged productions.”

Gershon also notes that as part of the initiative, the Chorale will identify new “homegrown” compositional voices and showcase them through different channels, such as main-stage performances, the High School Choir Festival or alternative performances spaces.

Following the “Composers Live!” event on October 15, the Los Angeles Master Chorale launches its first “Made in L.A.” concert, with an entire program featuring works by the composers noted above and others, on Sunday, November 15, 2015, 7 pm, at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Highlights include three Chorale-commissioned world premieres: Ave Maria/Scarborough Fair by Paul Chihara, a prolific composer celebrated for works “sleek and luxuriously colored” (New York Times), Smiley’s In the Desert With You and Alcala’s Mangá Pakalagián, featuring Subla, a Filipino kulintang ensemble led by master musician Danongan Kalanduyan. Other works include the U.S. premiere of Beal’s The Salvage Men as well as Trumbore’s The Whole Sea in Motion, Brown’s Another Lullaby for Insomniacs, Kirchner’s Memorare, and Ave Maria by National Medal of the Arts recipient and former LAMC Composer in Residence Morten Lauridsen.

Tickets to “Composers Live!” are free, but advance reservations are required. For tickets and information, please call (213) 972-3122, or visit www.lamc.org. The AT&T Theatre is located at 1150 S. Olive St., Los Angeles, in downtown Los Angeles.
