Praised by the New York Times as "Poignant...a monument to the courage of one man to foster hope among prisoners with little other solace," Defiant Requiem makes its Boston premiere on April 27, 2015 at 8:00pm at Boston Symphony Hall.

The "extraordinarily beautiful and moving" concert/drama commemorates the courageous Jewish prisoners in the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp during World War II who performed Verdi's Requiem 16 times, as an act of defiance and resistance to their Nazi captors. Defiant Requiem features a complete live performance of Verdi's Requiem interspersed with historic film, testimony from survivors and narration that tells this tale of audacious bravery.

Defiant Requiem is performed in honor of Newton Centre residents and Holocaust survivors Edgar and Hana Krasa. Mr. Krasa was Rafael Schachter's barracks-mate and sang in all 16 performances of the Verdi Requiem at Terezin. His testimony is featured in performances of Defiant Requiem. Edgar and Hana's sons Rafael (named for Rafael Schachter) and Daniel and their grandson Alexander will sing in this moving performance. Read more about Edgar Krasa at this link.

This performance will feature the Orchestra of Terezin Remembrance, the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, actors Jeremiah Kissel and Will LeBow, and soloists soprano Aga Mikolaj, mezzo-soprano Ann McMahon Quintero, tenor Marc Heller, and bass Nathan Stark. It will be conducted by Maestro Murry Sidlin, president of The Defiant Requiem Foundation and creator of this powerful concert/drama.
