Ellen Taaffe Zwilich To Compose First Concerto For Piano, Percussion and Orchestra

April 21, 2014 | By Naturally Sharp, Inc.
The highly respected American composer, ELlen Taaffe Zwilich, has decided to embark on an exciting journey to pen the first "Concerto for Piano, Percussion and Orchestra". Aside from Bela Bartok's "Concerto for Two Pianos, Percussion and Orchestra", this will be, to our knowledge, the first work in this combination.

Ellen's personal statement:

"It has been my pleasure to have collaborated with Jeffrey Biegel for over a decade. I've found it inspiring.

After seeing and hearing a recent performance with Evan Biegel playing percussion in my "Shadows for Piano and Orchestra", I am excited about the prospect of writing a "Concerto for Piano and Percussion for the father-son duo and orchestra. Evan has the ear of a fine percussionist and even in the orchestral percussion part of "Shadows", his range as a performer was impressive. I also find the idea of a father-son duo intriguing and suggestive of many dramatic ideas. I hope to have the opportunity to explore this." -Ellen Taaffe Zwilich

Widely considered to be one of America’s leading composers, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich was born in Miami, Florida in 1939. She studied at the Florida State University and The Juilliard School where her major teachers were Roger Sessions and Elliott Carter. Zwilich is the recipient of numerous prizes and honors, including the 1983 Pulitzer Prize in Music (the first woman ever to receive this coveted award), the Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Chamber Music Prize, the Arturo Toscanini Music Critics Award, the Ernst von Dohnanyi Citation, an Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and 4 Grammy nominations.
