Guitarist Jose Lezcano Premieres His Concierto Cubanero on May 22 at 3 PM

Director
Grammy-nominated guitarist and composer José Manuel Lezcano will be the featured soloist in the first performance of his newly minted Concierto Cubanero on Sunday, May 22 at 3 PM. He will be accompanied by the North/South Chamber Orchestra led by its founder, Max Lifchitz.

The concert will take place at the auditorium of Christ & St Stephen's Church (120 West 69th St) in New York City. Admission is free (no tickets needed).

Born in Havana, Cuba in 1960, Lezcano has delighted audiences on four continents. The New Millennium Guitar Magazine described him as "a superb guitarist as well as a first-rate composer and arranger."

His recently completed concerto is in two movements and recalls sounds often heard in such popular genres as Cha- cha-cha and Bolero.

In addition to Lezcano's piece, the program will also feature premieres of works by Carlos Rausch (from Argentina); William Ortiz (from Puerto Rico); and Max Lifchitz (from Mexico). All of the composers will be in attendance and will introduce their works to the public.

Argentinean Carlos Rausch (b. 1924; Buenos Aires) will be represented on the program by his 2010 composition Musica para 10 instruments (Music for 10 Instruments) a set of variations on an original theme for winds and strings. Active for many years as a conductor of ballet orchestras, Rausch holds degrees in composition from SUNY Stony Brook and Columbia University. He came to New York in 1958 and currently resides in Scottsdale, AZ.

William Ortiz (b. 1947; Salinas, Puerto Rico) grew up in New York and attended SUNY Stony Brook and SUNY Buffalo where he studied with Morton Feldman. He teaches at the University of Puerto Rico, Bayamon campus. His new work Transito makes us of Caribbean rhythms and gestures in an innovative and personal manner.

The last piece on the program will be Yellow Ribbons No. 42 by Max Lifchitz, the orchestra's music founder. Lifchitz (b. 1948 in Mexico City) has lived in New York City since 1966. Active as performer and composer, he studied at The Juilliard School and Harvard University.

North/South Consonance’s 2010-11 season is made possible in part with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs; grants from Columbia University’s Ditson Fund and the American Federation of Musicians (Local 802); as well as contributions by many generous individuals.
