Hitzacker Summer Music Festival
WHAT DISTINGUISHES THIS FESTIVAL
The festival has highlighted chamber music in the countryside since 1946. The festival's motto: "Tradition and Today. A Step Ahead since 1946." Or, as the critic for the North German Broadcasting Corporation put it, "Hitzacker is and remains to be a place for discovery, experiment, intensive debate. Fantastic!"
FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS
This year's musical focus is on Joseph Haydn, especially on his role as a musical innovator. With inspiration and courage, he broke new ground and had a formative influence on an entire era and beyond.

Great artists will embrace Haydn's spirit, humor and creative power, develop their own program ideas and forge connections: Antje Weithaas, Kristian Bezuidenhout, Ian Bostridge, Dorothée Röschmann, the Grau-Schumacher Piano Duo, and the Kuss Quartet; instruments such as the baryton, theorbo, and fortepiano will convey the impressions of historical sound.

Haydn in jazz will be featured in a concert by Till Brönner and Frank Chastenier, and Haydn's sacred work The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross will be accompanied by ballet; there will also be the world premiere of a new piece by Matthew Slomowitz.

WHAT DISTINGUISHES THIS FESTIVAL
During the pre-festival open-call period of four weeks, distinguished panelists bring their top selections to the table. Unlike other festivals, the focus of MATA Festival is on these selected submissions, building a common place for discovery and interaction, a place to cultivate new collaborations, and spark ideas and conversations.
FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS
Drawing on the centenary of Morton Feldman—a pioneer of indeterminacy whose compositional practice was influenced by abstract expressionism—this year's festival engages with music that strives for purity of expression, quietude, and mysticism.

Programs will feature compositions that include, but are not limited to, works that resonate with Feldman's ethos, inviting one to consider listening as an act of discovery: Music that challenges formal conventions, embraces introspection, explores the ephemeral and the tactile, and cultivates an intimate relationship with sound. Special interest will be focused on works that emphasize acoustic instruments, utilizing natural resonance, subtle gestures, and the tangible presence of sound in space. Featured selections will reflect on Feldman's approaches as points of departure rather than prescription—not calling for imitation, but for works that show his musical spirit.
