MISSION
Combining an intensive, conservatory experience with the practicality of a music, business, and liberal arts curriculum, the McDuffie Center for Strings prepares the entrepreneurial musician for success. The Center’s distinguished faculty artists are dedicated to the development of young artists pursuing personal and musical excellence through four years of one-on-one mentorships. Through Mercer courses, the Center encourages its young musicians to engage with all aspects of the 21st century performing-arts world. This present environment is challenging to navigate, yet bursting with opportunity for the imaginative, entrepreneurial artist—precisely the type of performer on faculty at the Center.

NWS BLUE PROJECTS: NWS Fellows and alumni participate in NWS BLUE projects. Standing for Build, Learn, Understand and Experiment, NWS’s BLUE is a combination of leadership and entrepreneurship training and hands-on experimentation that provides NWS Fellows and alumni with a comprehensive skill set to complement their musical training. NWS BLUE enables all Fellows and selected alumni to pursue musical activism based on their personal interests with their own original initiatives, from concept to execution. NWS BLUE is currently being studied as part of a long-term research project on sustainable entrepreneurship in the performing arts supported by NEA Research Labs: The Arts, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation.

AUDITION SEMINARS: An intensive four-day audition preparation seminar, involving visiting coaches from major orchestras, is held each year. In addition, Fellows organize monthly mock auditions intended to replicate the conditions of professional orchestra auditions. There is also an annual series of workshops with psychologist Dr. Noa Kageyama.

The Orchestra Now (TŌN) is a unique pre-professional orchestra and master’s degree program designed to prepare musicians for the challenges facing the modern symphony orchestra.
