2021 GUIDE TO FESTIVALS

Monteux School and Music Festival
Monteux School and Music Festival
WHAT DISTINGUISHES THIS FESTIVAL
This 78-year old school for conductors carries on the traditions started by founder Pierre Monteux, currently with only the third Music Director, Michael Jinbo, and all conductors must also play in the orchestra, thus learning from both sides of the podium.
FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS
Founded as a school for conductors in 1943 by renowned conductor Pierre Monteux, the Monteux School and Music Festival is one of the finest summer training programs and festivals of its kind. It is based on Monteux's belief that conductors should play in the orchestra while observing the lessons of their colleagues, thus learning from both sides of the podium. The school offers an intensive six-week program that includes a series of symphonic, chamber and children's concerts in a creative, supportive environment. Alumni have gone on to successful careers in the orchestral, opera, and education fields throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe and Asia. Previous coaches include: Nathan Cole, First Associate Concertmaster, Los Angeles Philharmonic; Brant Taylor, cello, Chicago Symphony Orchestra; Gabe Lefkowitz, Concertmaster, Louisville Orchestra; Jennifer Gunn, piccolo/flute, Chicago Symphony Orchestra; Felicia Foland, bassoon, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra; Tony Prisk, trumpet, Philadelphia Orchestra; Stephen Lange, trombone, Boston Symphony Orchestra.
