BIOGRAPHY
Steinway Artist, Susan Merdinger has been internationally acclaimed in prestigious newspapers and journals for her stunning performances. Critics have described her playing as “eloquent”, “spellbinding” and “virtuosic”. With a riveting stage presence, she regularly commands standing ovations from her emotionally charged and spiritually uplifting performances. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung described her recital as a “daring, enormously joyous presentation which captured and transfixed the audience”. Fanfare Magazine declared that her “Carnival” CD was “exquisitely detailed and full of life”. Indeed, performances by Ms. Merdinger are a celebration of a life passionately immersed in classical music performance.
Performance Experience
Merdinger enjoys an active schedule performing as a concerto soloist, recitalist, duo pianist, chamber musician and recording artist. Performing her sold-out solo recital debut in Carnegie Recital Hall at age twenty-five, as a Winner of Artists International, Merdinger has continued to grace the stages of some of the world’s best concert halls. Merdinger was presented in her International Debut Recital Tour, under the sponsorship of the International Concert Administration to great critical acclaim and has performed on five continents in ten different countries. In recent seasons she has made solo orchestral debuts with The Chicago Philharmonic and with the Orquesta Sinfonica del Estado de Mexico. Her live performances and recordings have been broadcast on TV and Radio worldwide, including WFMT, WQXR, BBC, BRT-3, WDAV, and more. She has also performed for prominent dignitaries and celebrities for many charitable fundraising events and has presented recitals and chamber music concerts at summer music festivals such as Chautauqua, Norfolk, Summit and Fontainebleau (France).
Merdinger collaborates frequently with distinguished principal members of the New York Philharmonic, New Jersey Symphony, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera Orchestra and National Symphony Orchestra. She is a Founding member of “The Five Greenes”, and Pianissimo!-Chicago’s Premiere Piano Ensemble and has been a regular Visiting Artist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Chamber Music Series with the Tononi Ensemble at The Art Institute and at Symphony Center since 2012. With over thirty solo and duo piano concerti in her repertoire, Merdinger has soloed under many distinguished conductors including Gabriela Diaz Alatriste, Mattia Rondelli, Francesco Milioto, Glenn Cortese, Sandra Dackow, and Ari Rudiakov.  An enthusiastic advocate of contemporary music, Merdinger has championed works by notable prize-winning composers such as Morton Gould, Augusta Read Thomas, Ilya Levinson, Margarita Zelenaia, Jeremy Beck, Elbio Barilari, Sandro Fazzolari, Aaron Copland, and Leroy Anderson.
Awards
Among her many honors, Merdinger is a First Prize Winner of the 2012 Bradshaw and Buono Competition and the 2013 International Music Competition of France, Winner of the Dewar’s Young Artists Award in Music, the Artists International Young Musicians Competition, the Artists International Distinguished Alumni Winners Prize, and the Masterplayers Prize. Ms. Merdinger is a Gold, Silver and Bronze Medalist of the Global Music Awards for her CD’s French Fantasy (Merdinger-Greene Piano Duo), Carnival (Solo), Soirée (Solo) and Four Centuries (Duo with Violinist David Yonan), which have received glowing reviews in journals and newspapers in the USA and Canada.
2017-2018 Season
Merdinger's performances for the 2017-2018 season include a return engagement on the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Chamber Music Series, performing with Principal Woodwinds and Principal VIolist of the CSO works by Beethoven, Poulenc, Loeffler and Bloch; a Chicago tour and Live from WFMT performance of the final installment of the Complete Beethoven Sonatas for Piano and Violin with International Prize-winning violinist Michaela Paetsch; Orchestral engagements to perform Cesar Franck's Symphonic Variations and Beethoven's Triple Concerto with the North Shore Chamber Orchestra in Chicago under direction of Anatol Lysenka; and solo recitals featuring works to be recorded for her upcoming sequel CD, Four Centuries - Works for Solo Piano. This program will feature a World Premiere of Four Preludes (2017) by noted American Composer, Jeremy Beck and dedicated to Susan Merdinger. Merdinger, along with her husband, Pianist and Music Director, Steven Greene, have also just launched the first ever Airbnb Classical Music Experience in Chicago./
2016-2017 Season
Highlights of the 2016-2017 season included Merdinger in orchestral engagements performing Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No.1, Bach-Vivaldi’s Concerto for Four Pianos and Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos, chamber music concerts featuring Piano Quartets of Beethoven and Brahms, Northbrook Two Piano Festival with Pianissimo!, and the continuation of the Complete Beethoven Sonatas for Piano/Violin and Piano/Cello Series for WFMT with National Symphony Orchestra cellist, Steven Honigberg and internationally acclaimed violinist, Ilya Kaler. Merdinger recorded solo piano repertoire by Chopin, Mendelssohn, Copland and Beethoven for Steinway Spirio- scheduled for release starting in April 2017. Spring/Summer 2017 also features Merdinger in collaboration with Italian Tenor, Gianni Coletta, and a concert tour in June performing Mozart’s Concerto No. 21 with James Rawie and the Tahoe Symphony Orchestra.
Education:
Conservatory and Ivy-league educated at Yale University, the Yale School of Music, the Manhattan School of Music, and the Ecole Normale de Musique in Fontainebleau, France, Merdinger studied with renowned pianists Claude Frank, Constance Keene and Gaby Casadesus, Seymour Lipkin and Ward Davenny as a recipient of generous merit scholarships and fellowships.
