Lawrence Golan’s second half of the 2023-24 season has included more than concert engagements. The American conductor, who also enjoys a quieter career as a composer, has been awarded top prizes at the United Kingdom’s 2024 St. Cecilia International Music Competition for his latest work, Giovanna d’Arco (Joan of Arc): the Prize for Original Composition and the Prize for Modern Music.
His performance of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 with York Symphony Orchestra won the Grand Prize, Professional category Prize and Romantic Music Prize. The awards come with various cash purses and other promotions, but the underlying reason for Golan’s entering was to honor his daughter (also named Giovanna). The work, the first of a triptych (he is writing a work for his son and wife as well) received its world premiere October 11, 2023, with the Lamont Symphony Orchestra (Denver, CO), is available through Notation Services, NYC Music Services. The St. Cecilia competition, based in the United Kingdom, is evaluated virtually.
“I am incredibly honored to have been awarded the top prizes for both conducting and for my original composition Giovanna d'Arco (Joan of Arc),” stated Golan. “Composing is a relatively new artistic outlet for me, and receiving validation like this is especially rewarding."
Earlier in January, York Symphony Orchestra, which Golan has led since 2014, announced an unprecedented 8-year extension to his contract as Music Director, guaranteeing his leadership through the orchestra’s upcoming milestone 100 year anniversary.
The remainder of Golan’s spring 2024 includes performances with Washington state’s Yakima Symphony Orchestra, Pennsylvania’s York Symphony Orchestra, Colorado’s Denver Philharmonic and Italy’s Orchestra Sinfonica Metropolitana di Bari.
Golan, acclaimed for his imaginative programming and evocative command of distinctive styles and composers, holds posts in the United States and abroad. In addition to regular guesting, Golan serves as Principal Guest Conductor of the Bayerische Philharmonie in Munich, Germany, as Music Director of Washington state’s Yakima Symphony Orchestra, Pennsylvania’s York Symphony Orchestra, and Colorado’s Denver Philharmonic. A dynamic, charismatic communicator and popular collaborator, Golan has conducted throughout the United States and in Bulgaria, Canada, China, Czech Republic, El Salvador, England, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. www.lawrencegolan.com
