New York, NY – GatherNYC, a revolutionary concert experience founded in 2017 by cellist Laura Metcalf and guitarist Rupert Boyd, continues its 2022-23 season at the series’ home venue at Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) (2 Columbus Circle). GatherNYC will present two concerts in February and two concerts in March, featuring cellist and vocalist Marika Hughes with guitarist Kyle Sanna on February 5, the Twelfth Night Ensemble on February 19, Kafka Fragments with soprano Ariadne Greif and violinist Alex Fortes on March 5, and harpist Brandee Younger on March 19. The expanded season now runs through May 28, 2023, with concerts held every other Sunday at 11am in The Theater at MAD, which is fully restored to its original mid-century design.

Guests at GatherNYC are served exquisite live classical music by New York’s most celebrated artists, a taste of the spoken word, and a brief celebration of silence. The entire experience lasts one hour and evokes the community and spiritual nourishment of a religious service – but the religion is music, and all are welcome.

Metcalf and Boyd say, “We are thrilled to be returning to the beautiful Museum of Arts and Design, offering 16 concerts throughout our 2022-2023 season. We look forward to providing our audiences with world-class musical experiences in an intimate, unique setting, complete with spoken word, silence, coffee and a communal, welcoming environment.”

Cellist and Vocalist Marika Hughes with Guitarist Kyle Sanna

Marika Hughes is a native New Yorker, a cellist, singer, and storyteller on The Moth. Described by All About Jazz as a musician who “makes a joyful noise at the intersection of classical, jazz and experimental avenues,” Hughes has worked with Whitney Houston, Lou Reed, Anthony Braxton, David Byrne, Adele, Henry Threadgill, D’Angelo, Idina Menzel, Nels Cline, Somi and Taylor Mac, among many others. She was a founding member of the Bay Area-based bands 2 Foot Yard (Two Foot Yard, Tzadik 2003 & Borrowed Arms, Yard Work, 2008) and Red Pocket (Thick, Tzadik 2004). She is a master teacher and director for Young Arts and a teaching-artist at Carnegie Hall’s Lullaby Project.

Hailed by The New Yorker as a “first-rate, versatile musician”, guitarist Kyle Sanna’s musical practice includes composition, improvisation, the recording studio, coding, and the traditional music of Ireland. His compositions have been performed at Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, the Royal Opera House in Oman, Sydney’s ABC studios, the National Recital Hall in Taipei, New York’s Carnegie Hall, and many points between. WNYC’s New Sounds and Soundcheck host John Schaefer called his music “unconventionally beautiful.” He is equally at home in the recording studio as on the stage, and has produced nine full-length albums by various artists. Kyle Sanna studied jazz at the University of Oregon and composition at the Université Lumière Lyon II in France. He lives in Brooklyn, NY.

Twelfth Night Ensemble

Based in NYC, Twelfth Night is an ensemble of historical performance specialists led by David Belkovski and Rachell Ellen Wong, formed with the firm belief that art is best explored as a meeting place of the past, present, and future. Inspired by Shakespeare’s play of the same name, the ensemble strives to invoke a spirit of boundless revelry, celebration, and community in their programming. The two co-founders are regarded as key young representatives of early music: Rachell is the only baroque artist to receive an Avery Fisher Career Grant and David is the only recipient in the field of early music to receive the Levinson Arts Achievement Award. In the 2022-2023 season, Twelfth Night will be hosted in concert series across the country, including Arizona Early Music, Chatham Baroque, Music Before 1800, and Apex Concert Series in Reno. Twelfth Night’s upcoming video release with renowned French soprano Julie Roset explores secular and sacred 17th-century Italian songs. Kafka Fragments with Soprano Ariadne Greif and Violinist Alex Fortes

Ariadne Greif and Alex Fortes perform Kurtág’s seminal work, Kafka Fragments from 1986, a setting of fragments of Kafka’s writing that the composer collected over several decades. The forty fragments, ranging from several seconds to several minutes long, catalog descriptions, emotions, diary entries and glimpses of the writer’s life. Critic Paul Griffiths wrote that the fragments, “are like those bits of crumpled paper which, when dropped into water (the music), unfold into flowers.”

Ariadne Greif began her opera career as a ‘boy’ soprano in the Los Angeles area and at the LA Opera, eventually making an adult debut singing Lutoslawski’s Chantefleurs et Chantefables with the American Symphony Orchestra. She starred in roles ranging from Therese/Tirésias in Poulenc’s Les Mamelles de Tirésias, to what Broadway World describes as a "sassy" Adina in The Elixir of Love with the Orlando Philharmonic, to Sappho in Atthis by Georg Friedrich Haas, for which the New York Times noted her “searing top notes,” and “dusky depths,” calling it “a solo high-wire act for Ms. Greif,” “a vehicle for Ms. Greif’s raw, no-holds-barred performance,” “one of the most searingly painful and revealing operatic performances in recent times.”

A native of San Diego, violinist Alex Fortes is recognized for his versatility and warmth. Recent orchestral and chamber music performances have included performances in France, Germany, Denmark, Austria, and Indonesia, as well as throughout North America with groups such as the Henschel Quartett, Dalí Quartet, Franklin String Quartet, Momenta Quartet, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the Knights, Quod Libet, and A Far Cry. His playing is featured on A Far Cry’s 2014 Grammy-nominated album, Dreams and Prayers, as well as on Law of Mosaics, which The New Yorker’s Alex Ross hailed as one of the top ten albums of 2014. He can also be heard on a forthcoming album with the Henschel Quartett and pianist Donald Berman featuring the music of Chris Theofanidis.

Harpist Brandee Younger

Brandee Younger is a Grammy-nominated harpist making waves for becoming the first Black female solo artist nominated in the Best Instrumental Composition category for her song “Beautiful Is Black" at the 2022 ceremony. Ravi Coltrane of The New York Times praises Younger, saying, “No harpist thus far has been more capable of combining all of the modern harp traditions.” Collaborating with artists such as Beyonce, John Legend, Lauryn Hill, and more, [Younger] demonstrates her ability to seamlessly inject the harp into arrangements and venues where it has historically been overlooked. Younger’s achievements are a testament to her deep love for and exemplary command of the instrument.
