New Piano Concerto for JFK, RBG, and MLK

August 4, 2021 | By Naturally Sharp Inc.

Pianist/composer Jeffrey Biegel announces his new work for piano and orchestra, "Three Reflections", orchestrations by Harrison Sheckler. The three reflections are standalone solo piano pieces, and are now being arranged for piano and orchestra by Mr. Biegel's former student at Brooklyn College, Mr. Sheckler. The second reflection, composed first as a solo piano composition in October 2000 after the passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, will have its premiere on October 7 with the composer at the piano, joined with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Lidiya Yankovskaya in a program including a new work by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich in memory of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, featuring mezzo-soprano, Denyce Graves joining Mr. Biegel and the orchestra.

The separate movements of "Three Reflections" are titled:

Reflection of Freedom: An Ode to John Fitzgerald Kennedy

Reflection of Justice: An Ode to Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Reflection of Equality: An Ode to Martin Luther King

The following is the solo piano version of "Reflection of Justice: An Ode to Ruth Bader Ginsburg" featured on Stars in the House, hosted by Seth Rudetsky and James Wesley

In creating these pieces, Mr. Biegel shares, "I created a tonal alphabet representing all the letters of our English alphabet. For example, after A-G, H is B-natural, I becomes C-natural, J becomes D-natural and so on. Each name became musical themes, JFK, John, Fitzgerald, Kennedy, RBG, Ruth Bader, Ginsburg, Kiki (her nickname), and MLK, Martin, Luther, and King. For JFK, I add "America the Beautiful" following the alphabetic themes, and fuse the names with the American hymn. For RBG, I only add a short theme from the "Star Spangled Banner", and, for MLK, I employ "Amazing Grace". I sincerely hope this will become a popular work, not only for myself to perform, but for all pianists with orchestra currently and in the future, and for solo piano recitals and recordings. Harrison Sheckler is adding a unique sonic landscape to these pieces, and is one of the most gifted arrangers I have come to know. Creating the true-to-life audio demos is thanks to another one of my wonderful students at Brooklyn College, Zhi Chen. It is inspiring to witness the talents of these young musicians, and I am honored to have them on my team!"

"Three Reflections" will available by the end of 2021. For more information, demos and booking, please contact Mr. Biegel at biegel88@yahoo.com
