Violinist St. John appointed member of the Order of Canada

OTTAWA – The office of the Governor General of Canada has announced that violinist Lara St. John has been appointed as a member of the Order of Canada. Each year since 1967, the Canadian government has recognized outstanding citizens for distinguished service in their fields. With today’s announcement, St. John joins the list of fewer than 7,500 prominent Canadians who have been inducted into the order since its creation. Past honorees have included Margaret Atwood, Leonard Cohen, Celine Dion, Frank Gehry, Wayne Gretsky, Ben Heppner, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Joni Mitchell and Oscar Peterson

“I am really honoured by this appointment” said St. John “and I’m thrilled to join this incredible group of fellow Canadians.”

St. John began playing the violin when she was 2, made her first appearance as soloist with orchestra at 4, and her European debut at 10. Since then, she has performed as soloist with the orchestras of Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Cleveland, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, Belgrade, Amsterdam, Queensland, Adelaide, Auckland, Tokyo, Kyoto, Shanghai, Hong Kong and São Paulo, as well as the Royal Phil., NDR Symphony, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, Camerata Ireland, the China Phil., Orquestra Sinfonica Brasileira and Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de México, among many others. Recitals in major concert halls have included Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, New York, Boston, San Francisco, Washington, Prague, Berlin, Bogotá, Lima, Tokyo and the Forbidden City.

St. John’s began her own label in 2000 and her recording of Mozart won a Juno Award in 2011. Her 2016 release of reimagined folk music, with Canadian pianist Matt Herskowitz, earned a five-star review from All About Jazz, and her latest, 2020’s Key of A had WholeNote calling it “..risk taking at its best and most exciting.”
