ABOUT MATTHIAS GOERNE

Celebrated around the globe for his opera and concert performances, German baritone Matthias Goerne is a frequent guest with leading orchestras and renowned festivals and concert halls. Among his musical partners are conductors of the first rank such as Claudio Abbado(†), Herbert Blomstedt, Riccardo Chailly, Christoph von Dohnányi, Gustavo Dudamel, Christoph Eschenbach, Daniele Gatti, Valery Gergiev, Bernard Haitink, Manfred Honeck, Mariss Jansons(†), Neeme Järvi, Paavo Järvi, Vladimir Jurowski, Andris Nelsons, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Seiji Ozawa, Antonio Pappano, Kirill Petrenko, Simon Rattle, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Franz Welser-Möst.

Upcoming and recent highlights include concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic and conductor Franz Welser-Möst, Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Christoph Eschenbach, Pittsburgh Symphony under Manfred Honeck, Amsterdam Concertgebouworkest under Jaap van Zweden, Orchestre National de France and Orchestre Philharmonique in Paris under Mikko Franck, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Rotterdam Philharmonic and Israel Philharmonic under Lahav Shani. In Berlin at Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Goerne is to sing the title roles in Richard Wagner’s ‚The Flying Dutchman‘ as well as in Alban Berg’s Wozzeck.

Goerne was Artist-in-Residence at Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie in 2017/18 as well as with the New York Philharmonic for their 2018/19 season. His recital and recording partners include pianists Vladimir Ashkenazy, Leif Ove Andsnes, Alfred Brendel, Seong-Jin Cho, Andreas Haefliger, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Jan Lisiecki and Daniil Trifonov. Recent recital engagements with pianist Jan Lisiecki include the Salzburg Festival, Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie, Warsaw's Chopin Festival, and the Klavierfestival Ruhr in Düsseldorf. 

He has appeared on the world’s principal opera stages, including The Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; Teatro Real in Madrid; Paris National Opera; Bayerische Staatsoper, and the Vienna State Opera. His carefully chosen roles range from Wolfram, Amfortas, Marke, Wotan, Orest, and Jochanaan to the title roles in Béla Bartók’s Duke Bluebeard’s Castle and Alban Berg’s Wozzeck.

Goerne’s artistry is documented by a prolific output of recordings, many of which have received international acclaim and awards. He is a five-time Grammy® nominated artist, and has received an ICMA award, a Gramophone Award, the BBC Music Magazine Vocal Award 2017, Diapason d’Or, and the ECHO Klassik 2017 in the category “Singer of the Year“. In 2019, three new recordings have been released: The Brahms Requiem with the Swedish Radio Symphony under Daniel Harding, a DVD of Alban Berg’s Wozzeck in the highly regarded William Kentridge production from the Salzburg Festival, and an album of Lieder by Robert Schumann, recorded with pianist Leif Ove Andsnes. He is featured as Wotan on the Naxos release of the entire Ring Cycle with the Hong Kong Philharmonic and conductor Jaap van Zweden. His latest release is of Beethoven’s Lieder with pianist Jan Lisiecki was been released in March 2020 by Deutsche Grammophon. 

A native of Weimar, he studied with Hans-Joachim Beyer in Leipzig, and later with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. In 2001, he was appointed an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music in London and was made Ambassador of Kunstfest Weimar in 2019.
