Pop Up Pipa with Wu Man: Episode 7: Basel Rajoub
Joined on this episode by Swiss-Syrian wind player Basel Rajoub, pipa virtuoso Wu Man continues to explore the world’s musical traditions through her video series Pop Up Pipa. Though best known as a saxophonist, Mr. Rajoub plays the duclar, a clarinet-like Middle Eastern instrument, in this performance with Wu Man. New episodes will also air on June 3 and 6, marking a shift to a twice-per-week, Wednesday-and-Saturday schedule moving forward.

Ahead of an Arizona PBS broadcast of Christopher Cerrone’s The Air Suspended, as performed by Shai Wosner and The Phoenix Symphony, Mr. Wosner, Mr. Cerrone, and Phoenix Symphony Music Director Tito Muñoz get together virtually for a pre-broadcast talk. In addition to this concerto, which was written for Mr. Wosner, the broadcast at 7:00 p.m. PT features Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 and Haydn’s “Drumroll” Symphony No. 103.

Every Saturday at 7:00 p.m. ET, violinist Jennifer Koh premieres new micro-works for solo violin as part of her and non-profit ARCO Collaborative’s Alone Together series. Twenty-one composers, most of whom have salaried positions or other forms of institutional support to carry them through this challenging time, are donating newly composed works to the project, while also each recommending a freelance composer to be formally commissioned. #ICYMI: In Case You Missed It
Jonathan Biss’s Benefit Concert for Artist Relief Tree
Last Wednesday, May 20, Jonathan Biss gave a special benefit recital in support of online fundraiser Artist Relief Tree, which was established to support artists affected financially by COVID-19. The event received more than 33,000 views and has raised nearly $30,000 so far. Viewers can still tune in on-demand to hear Mr. Biss perform Schumann’s Kreisleriana, selections from Janácek’s On an Overgrown Path, and two works by Mozart—Piano Sonata in F major, K 533/494, and Rondo in A minor, K 511. Through the end of the day today (May 27), donations may still be made in connection with this recital. Donations above $100 will receive a signed CD; for $500 or more Mr. Biss will join a private video session.
