The Boston Camerata Remembers Tenor Timothy Leigh Evans

September 12, 2019 | By Stephanie Janes

The Boston Camerata, grieving, announces the death of our dear friend and colleague, British tenor Timothy Leigh Evans on September 2, 2019 from a sudden and massive heart attack. Tim, whose collaboration with Camerata spanned nearly a quarter century, was a superlative musician, alert, accurate, and unfailingly musical; his ability to deliver a sung text in English or French or Latin or German, with exactly the right phrasing and inflection was a wonder to behold and experience, He was, as well, a superb comic actor with impeccable timing and an inimitable, infectious zany spirit. To top it all, Tim was a loveable human being and a great companion on tours, home concerts, and media projects.

Tim toured extensively with The Boston Camerata over a twenty-five year period, appearing with the ensemble in the United States, Scandinavia, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Australia, and New Zealand. His final American appearance, in a Camerata production, took place in June at the Boston Early Music Festival.

We are heartbroken that the new Camerata recording ("Free America!," on Harmonia Mundi), only days from public release, on which he sings so beautifully, will be his last appearance with us. In addition to his newly-released performances on "Free America!," his fine, clear voice can be heard on the CD's "Liberty Tree" (Erato/Warner) and "The Golden Harvest" (Glissando/Camerata). This is truly a profound loss.

Our thoughts go out to Tim's family in Germany: his wife, Suse, and his two children, Emily and Benjamin.

Timothy began singing at the age of five. He held degrees from Huddersfield School of Music and was a Licentiate of both the Royal Academy and Trinity College, London. He was a member of Waverly Consort and Western Wind Vocal Ensemble and sung with ARTEK beginning in 1993. As a specialist in the performance of early music, Mr. Evans appeared in New York's major concert halls and toured the U.S., Mexico, Australia, Portugal, Hong Kong, and Holland. He made his Lincoln Center debut in Bach's B minor Mass with Joshua Rifkin. He was a member of the prestigious vocal sextet Hudson Shad, with whom he made his Broadway debut. He recorded on the Deutsche Grammophon, Virgin Classics, EMI Angel, Dorian, Erato and Musical Heritage Society labels.

About The Boston Camerata

The Boston Camerata occupies a unique place in the universe of European and American early music ensembles. Camerata's distinguished rank stems partly from its longevity: founded in 1954, Camerata is one of the longest-lived groups to be functioning, and vigorously so, up to the present day. Directed by French-born vocalist, scholar and stage director Anne Azéma, the Boston Camerata has continued to create, over more than a half-century of activity, a large number of concert and recorded productions. Two new recordings appear in 2019: Treasures of Devotion presents music from the early Renaissance and Free America! Songs of Resistance and Rebellion by Harmonia Mundi. bostoncamerata.org
