New York, NY (October 9, 2018) — On Saturday, November 17, 2018 at 8:00pm at Alice Tully Hall, American Classical Orchestra (ACO) presents Imperial Haydn with guest soloist Aisslinn Nosky (violin) and ACO principals Marc Schachman (oboe), Andrew Schwartz (bassoon), and Myron Lutzke (cello)Along with Haydn’s “L’Impériale” (No. 53), the program also features his Sinfonia Concertante in B-flat major and a rare performance of Kalliwoda’s Symphony No. 5 in B minor.

"This is likely the New York premiere of Johann Kalliwoda’s Fifth Symphony,” says ACO Founder and Artistic Director Thomas Crawford. “Remarkably, a newly published edition of a Kalliwoda overture was performed at the inaugural concert of the New York Philharmonic Society in 1842, alongside Beethoven’s brand new Fifth Symphony. Now, nearly two centuries later, the Philharmonic archives reveals hundreds of performances of works by Beethoven between, but only one by Kalliwoda. We’re thrilled to be the orchestra to change that.”

A distinctive feature of ACO performances are the engaging, informal concert previews by Thomas Crawford with the support of the full orchestra on stage.

The orchestra’s current season includes two more concerts at Lincoln Center: Joyous Bach, featuring ACO principal flutist Sandra Miller and The ACO Chorus (Thursday, March 7, 2019 at 8:00pm); and Beethoven’s Eroica, a performance of the composer’s monumental Symphony No. 3, preceded by his Coriolan Overture (Friday, May 17, 2019 at 8:00pm). In addition, ACO is presenting two salon concerts at landmark New York City venues: Bass (Thursday, January 24, 2019) a revelatory look back at the instrument’s role in classical music, with ACO principal bassist John Feeney; and A Ladies' Journey 1876 (Thursday, June 6, 2019), an evening of 19th century parlor music with soprano Christina Kay, Alex Cook on horn and Gwendolyn Toth on fortepiano.

About Thomas Crawford
A champion of historically accurate performance styles in Baroque, Classical and Early Romantic music, ACO Artistic Director and Founder Thomas Crawford formed the orchestra thirty-four years ago, with the goal of bringing period music to a wider audience. Central to this vision is community outreach, including ACO’s Classical Music for Kids (CMK), which Mr. Crawford founded twenty years ago. Today, CMK visits public elementary students Connecticut and New York City, many undeserved, introducing thousands of students to the beauty of live classical music for the very first time.

Thomas Crawford holds a Bachelor of Music in Composition and Organ Performance from Eastman School of Music, where he studied choral and orchestral conducting under Samuel Adler. After graduation, he trained with Hugo Fiorato, conductor of the New York City Ballet Orchestra, and went on to earn a Master of Arts in Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, Andre Watts, Dawn Upshaw, Richard Goode, and Vladimir Feltsman and produced recordings with great American pianists Malcolm Bilson and Keith Jarrett.

About American Classical Orchestra
A leader in the field of historically accurate performance, the American Classical Orchestra (ACO) is a period instrument ensemble that invites audiences to enter the sound world of the 17th, 18th, and 19th, century master composers through the unique blend of period instruments and top period instrumentalists using er-specific performances techniques.

Highlights of the ACO's history include performances at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in collaboration with the exhibition Art and the Empire City: New York, 1825 - 1861, the Lincoln Center Great Performers Series, a sold-out performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, and at David Geffen Hall, and a staged performance of Handel's opera Alceste as part of the ACO's Handelfest 2014.

Founded by Artistic Director Thomas Crawford in 1984 as The Orchestra of the Old Fairfield Academy in Fairfield, Connecticut, the American Classical Orchestra moved to New York City in 2005, emerging as the City’s premier period instrument ensemble.

The ACO is dedicated to the appreciation and understanding of classical music through educational programs, and spreading historically-informed performance practices to new generations. In order to provide audiences with first-hand insight into the music, Music Director Thomas Crawford gives informative concert previews with live musical examples from the orchestra prior to each concert. Through its immersive in-school program, Classical Music for Kids, the orchestra has inspired hundreds of thousands of young students and musicians. For this work, the ACO was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts grant and Early Music America prize. For more information, visit www.aconyc.org.
