From March to April 2018, Yan-Chuen Lee, Canadian Tenor and Pianist Mario Ostrowski recorded an exquisite selection of Elizabethan Art Songs by John Dowland (1563-1626), some of which were performed in the Solo Dowland Project concert debut on February 25, 2018. Solo Dowland Project: Studio Recordings, Pt. 1 features 10 Dowland songs completely self-produced by YC Lee, samples of which can be heard on his CBC Artist Profile (I Saw My Lady Weep, Rest Awhile You Cruel Cares, Sleep Wayward Thoughts) and SoundCloud (Come Heavy Sleep).
Solo Dowland Project: Studio Recordings, Pt. 1, reveals YC’s polished authentic Italian bel canto technique and is elegantly balanced with Mario’s skillful ornamentation and rhythmic vitality. The duo’s unique and reimagined interpretation of Dowland’s aching love songs will bring listeners to a healing and reflective place. YC says: “We are living in precarious times. And, if you are someone who feels vulnerable about the cultural uncertainty that we are living in, then let these Dowland songs wrap you, refresh and restore you.” More of YC’s commentary can be found on his WordPress blog. This album marks an intriguing departure from his previous album series Solo Recital Debut and Solo Messiah Project.
ABOUT YC LEE: Based in Toronto, Canadian Tenor YC Lee has worked with Tapestry New Opera Works, Opera Hamilton, Opera bel canto of York, Summer Opera Lyric Theatre, Opera Buffa and Opera Anonymous amongst others. Awards include Gold Medal from the Royal Conservatory of Music (Performer's Associate Diploma SINGING). His mentors are Lawrence Pitchko and David Varjabed.
