Salastina Music Society Announces 2012-2013 Season

Los Angeles, CA – Salastina Music Society is pleased to announce its 2012-2013 Season featuring three different and carefully crafted chamber music concert formats across the Los Angeles area. In its third season, Salastina is expanding both its reach and mission to share intimate chamber music performance with more audiences through standard concert venues and pairing music with a fine dining culinary experience. Each of Salastina’s three formats: Salastina Presents, An Audible Feast and Masterpiece Discovery, all seek to explore chamber music in varied fashion through the collective vision of Artistic Directors and Founders, violinists Maia Jasper and Kevin Kumar.

“From the start, our focus has been to design concert formats that deepen the connection with our listeners and dissolve barriers that might exist. Whether we're giving program notes from the stage or emphasizing variety in our programming, everything is meant to keep our audiences engaged on various levels so we can really communicate what chamber music has to offer. This season our intention is to take everything a step further,” states Kumar. Jasper continues, “we are extremely excited to be presenting this collective series of concerts with such distinguished artists in just our third year of operation. We are especially pleased to welcome esteemed local artists cellist Antonio Lysy and pianist Norman Krieger on our first concert at Colburn School’s Thayer Hall in September.”

Salastina’s signature Salastina Presents explores Claude Debussy and his World with guest soprano Elissa Johnston (Sat., Nov. 17 at Mount Saint Mary’s College, 3PM; Sun., Nov. 18 at Thayer Hall at The Colburn School, 8PM); presents the World Premiere of a new work by composer-in-residence Jeremy Cavaterra alongside works by Mozart, Purcell, Handel- Halvorsen and Piazzolla (Sat., March 9 at Thayer Hall at the Colburn School, 8PM; Sun., March 10, 3PM) at Edye Second Space at the Broad Stage); and celebrates Benjamin Britten’s Centennial with guest artists Marisa Sorajja, Associate Concertmaster of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, and Danielle Belen, concertmaster of the New West Symphony (June 8 at Garrison Theater at Scripps College; June 9 at Thayer Hall at the Colburn School). Series highlights include the performances of rarely performed larger chamber works including Britten’s Les Illuminations and Schoenberg’s arrangement of Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun.

The Masterpiece Discovery format illuminates a single work of the repertory and kicks off on Saturday, September 15 at 8PM with a concert at The Colburn School’s Thayer Hall followed by a Sunday, September 15 concert at 6PM as part of “Sundays Live” at the L.A. County Museum of Art. Featuring renowned local cellist and UCLA Faculty member Antonio Lysy, distinguished local pianist and USC Thornton School of Music faculty member Norman Krieger, and violist Helen Callus, the concert explores Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet in depth alongside his 5 pieces for two violins and piano. Further concerts on this series explore Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet with special host KUSC’s Brian Lauritzen (Fri., Jan 18 at Zipper Hall at the Colburn School, 8PM; Sun., Jan. 19 at Chapel of Mount Saint Mary’s College, 3PM) and Schoenberg’s Verklarte Nacht alongside J.S. Bach’s St. Anne Prelude featuring LACO Principal Cellist Andrew Shulman (Fri., May 10 at Edye Second Space at the Broad Stage, 8PM; Sat., May 11 at Zipper Hall at the Colburn School, 8PM).

An Audible Feast explores the “Four Seasons” through music and culinary delights featuring Chef Sara VanDerVoort’s (FOODLOVESWINE) innovative menus and wine pairings inspired by The Four Seasons of Vivaldi and Piazzolla and a fifth concert featuring music by Puccini, Janacek, Verdi, Smetana and Bernstein. The five concert series begins with The Last Rose of Summer (Aug. 12) and continues with Autumn Bacchanale (October 14); Invierno Porteno (Dec. 15); Epicurean Romance (Feb. 15); and Sound of Spring (April 14). All Sunday evening culinary concert experiences begin at 5:30PM and take place at locations in downtown Los Angeles to be announced 48 hours ahead of time only to ticket buyers.

Tickets range from $30 for a standard performance to $125 for An Audible Feast. Tickets can be purchased online by visiting the Salastina Society website at www.salastinamusicsociety.org or by calling 1(323) 332-6874.
