Nashville, Tenn. – This week the Nashville Symphony is hosting four musicians and Music Director David Handel from the Orquesta Sinfónica de la UNCuyo in Mendoza, Argentina, as part of a unique international exchange program between the two orchestras.

From May 7 through May 14, UNCuyo musicians Samira Musri, principal flute; Andrea Yurcic, principal bassoon; Sebastian Benenati, principal clarinet; and Alexander Takhmanov, principal French horn, will rehearse with the Nashville Symphony and perform at the Symphony’s Side by Side concert on May 10 and Donor Appreciation concert on May 11.

On September 17, 2007, the Nashville Symphony (http://www.nashvillesymphony.org) will reciprocate, when four musicians and one administrator travel to Mendoza to perform and work with the Orquesta Sinfónica de la UNCuyo (http://www.orquesta.uncu.edu.ar/). Nashville Symphony representatives are not yet determined.

“Music can definitely transcend cultural boundaries, and this exchange with Maestro Handel and the UNCuyo Symphony will give the Nashville Symphony an exciting opportunity to learn from and share ideas with our Argentinean colleagues,” said Alan D. Valentine, President and CEO of the Nashville Symphony. “We feel fortunate to participate in this important exchange.”

American conductor David Handel, Music Director of both the Orquesta Sinfónica de la UNCuyo and the National Symphony of Bolivia, proposed the exchange with the Nashville Symphony after David English, a Nashville native and entrepreneur living in Mendoza, recommended the orchestra. English will also travel to Nashville for the exchange. Maestro Handel has performed similar exchanges with the National Symphony of Bolivia between the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the New World Symphony. “The Nashville Symphony is one of the fastest-growing orchestras in the United States right now, so they seemed like a perfect match for UNCuyo Symphony, especially as we are exploring different funding and structural models for our organization,” said David Handel. “Our trip to Nashville will be an unforgettable experience for both me and my UNCuyo colleagues.”
