London Symphony Orchestra Recruits Barbara Hannigan
The London Symphony Orchestra has added the much-heralded Canadian soprano and conductor Barbara Hannigan to its artistic team, in the newly created role of Associate Artist for a term of three years. In her new position, Hannigan will create her own programming with the orchestra and will offer suggestions for other repertoire throughout the season. She will lead several LSO concerts each year and in 2023 will participate in the orchestra’s European tour.
“Barbara Hannigan is a unique artist in her ability to combine conducting and singing,” said Kathryn McDowell, the LSO’s managing director when making the announcement. “She is supremely gifted in both disciplines…. Already in her performances with LSO over the last few years, she has introduced players and audiences to new works that lend themselves to her special talents.”
For her part, Hannigan said, “I am thrilled to accept this appointment, developing and performing beautiful and fascinating programs with my colleagues at the LSO. This collaboration gives me a lot of energy and inspiration.'”
Hannigan serves as both conductor and singer with the LSO on February 23 and 24, then heads to Denmark and Germany in the same dual roles before conducting the Juilliard Orchestra on March 31 in mixed repertoire.
