The Angel’s Share presents Gil Shaham & The Knights, June 25 at The Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn

June 17, 2021 | By Unison Media
Andrew Ousley

The evening is centered around a pandemic-proof “pocket” reduction of the Beethoven Violin Concerto, arranged by The Knights and featuring Shaham with five musicians from the NYC-based orchestra

The event opens with two hours of music by 8-piece swing band The Grand St. Stompers, with spirits and beer tastings and local food trucks

Gil and The Knights recently released an album on Shaham’s own Canary Classics label, pairing the sole violin concertos of Beethoven and Brahms

One of Brooklyn’s sterling cultural products…known far beyond the borough for their relaxed virtuosity and expansive repertory.

The Angel’s Share will continue its third season on June 25, with superstar violinist Gil Shaham and the Brooklyn-based ensemble The Knights, performing their own pandemic-proof “pocket” version of Beethoven’s immortal Violin Concerto, in an outdoor performance set underneath Green-Wood’s historic Gothic Arch.

The Angel's Share series takes its name from the distiller’s term for whiskey that evaporates while maturing in the barrel, thus going to the angels. Accordingly, this one-of-a-kind, one-night-only outdoor event will open with two hours of jazz at sunset, performed by 8-piece swing band The Grand St. Stompers. Audience members can also wander the grounds of the cemetery, where they’ll find a series of tastings of whiskey, mezcal, gin and other spirits from distilleries like Appalachian Gap Distillery, Cardinal Spirits, Coppersea Distilling, Madre Mezcal and more, as well as local breweries. Snacks will be provided, with more substantial fare available to purchase from local food purveyors like Adreame of Vegan and more.

Then, at dusk, Gil and a contingent of five top-shelf players from The Knights (including founding brothers Colin and Eric Jacobsen) will take the stage to close the evening with Beethoven’s life-affirming masterwork.

The ensemble’s Angel’s Share debut follows the Spring release of ‘Beethoven and Brahms: Violin Concertos’ on Shaham’s own Canary Classics label, which featured the Grammy-award winning violinist’s very first recording of the Beethoven concerto.

The Angel’s Share is curated by Andrew Ousley and co-presented by Death of Classical and The Green-Wood Historic Fund.

Beethoven Violin Concerto (pocket edition)

June 25, 2021

7:00 - 10:00 PM ET

Normally, in order to perform Beethoven’s luminous, life-affirmingly beautiful Violin Concerto, one needs a full orchestra…fortunately, we have superstar violinist Gil Shaham and a contingent of five top-shelf players from Brooklyn’s own ensemble, The Knights (including founding brothers Colin and Eric Jacobsen), who have shrunk the work down to their pandemic-proof “pocket Beethoven” version. They’ll make six players sound like sixty, and cut to the core of this transcendent masterwork.

Join us for this one-of-a-kind, one-night-only outdoor event. The evening opens with jazz at sunset accompanied by a tasting of whiskey, mezcal, gin and other spirits from distilleries like Appalachian Gap Distillery, Madre Mezcal and more. At dusk, Gil and the Knights will take the stage for some deliciously bite-sized Beethoven!
