Eight Finalists Representing Six Countries Advance to the Finals of the 2021 Concours Musical International de Montréal (CMIM) Piano Edition

Pianists from Canada, Italy, China, France, South Korea and Japan will compete for over $235,000 in prizes in the virtual finals. The one-hour recital performances will be streamed free to the public May 10-13, 2021

MONTRÉAL, QC – April 30, 2021 2:15 ET p.m. – Concours Musical International de Montréal (CMIM) has announced the names of the eight pianists who will participate in the Final Round of its 19th edition.

The international jury of nine, presided over by Mr. Zarin Mehta, met remotely to identify the eight outstanding competitors. The jury, spread over three continents, includes Arnaldo Cohen (United States), Martin Engstroem (Sweden), Till Fellner (Austria), Mari Kodama (Japan), Hélène Mercier (Canada), Costa Pilavachi (Canada), Charles Richard-Hamelin (Canada), Rena Shereshevskaya (Russia) and Susan Wadsworth (United States).

The eight finalists will return to the concert hall to record a second, one-hour recital in hopes of winning the top prize valued at over $180,000 including a concerto performance with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and a solo album recording on the Steinway & Sons label. The finals will be broadcast at concoursmontreal.ca from May 10-13 (full schedule below). Among their selections, each participant must perform one work by J.S. Bach in the semi-finals and finals and three of Twenty-four Preludes by Juno Award-winning Canadian composer John Burge.

About the Concours musical international de Montréal (CMIM)

Founded in 2001, the CMIM is an annual event whose attendance numbers have grown significantly this year thanks to virtual listening, free content and accessibility to recitals. This is a sigh of relief for the young pianists who need the public so much to continue their development and launch their careers.

The CMIM aims to discover and help young singers, violinists and pianists who distinguish themselves by the mastery of their art. Since the first edition devoted to singing in 2002, nearly 4,000 candidates have registered for the Competition and no less than 500 have been welcomed to Montreal, to the delight of music lovers. CMIM has several notable laureates, including Measha Brueggergosman, Philippe Sly, Benjamin Beilman, Beatrice Rana, Angela Meade and Charles Richard-Hamelin.
