International relationships continue to grow despite the challenges of COVID-19. Today, American conductor Lawrence Golan, in his post as Music Director of the Denver Philharmonic, and Bayerische Philharmonie Artistic Director Mark Mast, have each been named Principal Guest Conductor respectively of each other's orchestra for the next three seasons.
The new posts are part of a deepening transatlantic relationship the Denver Philharmonic and Bayerische Philharmonie have fostered over the past several years, with the two orchestras exchanging musicians for six concerts (three in each city). Both orchestras today officially announced the extension of their agreement through 2024.
The two orchestras most recently collaborated in 2019 at the Munich International Airport as part of a sister-city celebration with DIA. Maestro Golan has conducted the Bayerische Philharmonie in Munich twice; third concert, scheduled for this past July 2020, was postponed due to COVID-19.
Golan said, “I so enjoy working with the Munich-based orchestra and chorus—both for their artistic excellence and for their warm and welcoming nature.” He continued, “DPO musicians very much enjoy working with Mark Mast as a guest conductor, and he’s become an audience favorite. We are delighted to now be bringing him over on a more formal and regular basis.”
In his new post, Golan will conduct in Munich once per season, and Mast will conduct in Denver once per season. This coming July 2022, Golan will lead the postponed encore performance of Beethoven’s 9th and other works featuring the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra and the Bayerische Philharmonie Chorus.The next Denver Philharmonic performance to be conducted by Mast is scheduled in Denver for April 2022.

Acclaimed for his vibrant, inspired performances, imaginative programming and evocative command of different styles and composers, American conductor Lawrence Golan has developed a reputation as a dynamic, charismatic communicator. He has conducted throughout the United States and in Bulgaria, Canada, China, Czech Republic, El Salvador, England, Georgia, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan, and continues to develop relationships with orchestras nationally and abroad.
Golan has served as Music Director of the Yakima Symphony Orchestra in Washington state since 2010, Colorado’s Denver Philharmonic since 2013, and Pennsylvania’s York Symphony Orchestra since 2014. He is also Music Director of Colorado’s Lamont Symphony Orchestra and Opera Theatre at the University of Denver.
A staunch advocate for music education, Lawrence Golan has been Director of Orchestral Studies and head of the graduate conducting program at the University of Denver since 2001. There he has won eight ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music, three Downbeat Magazine Awards for “Best College Symphony Orchestra," and The American Prize for Orchestral Performance – Collegiate Division.
An accomplished recording artist and violinist, Golan served as Principal Second violinist of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra (1989-1990) and then Concertmaster of the Portland Symphony Orchestra for eleven years (1990-2001), before focusing his career on the podium.

Denver Philharmonic Orchestra
The Denver Philharmonic Orchestra (DPO) is a non-profit symphony orchestra founded in1948 by Dr. Antonia Brico, the first woman to conduct the New York Philharmonic orchestra. Bayerische Philharmonie
The Bayerische Philharmonie is a large symphonic and choral organization, encompassing four orchestras and three choruses. The Bayerische Philharmonie performs at venues allover metro-Munich and throughout Bavaria. The orchestra’s signature concert hall is Herkulessaal (Hercules Hall), located in the Munich Residenz, the former royal palace of the Bavarian monarchs.
