Violinist Jinjoo Cho to Perform Carnegie Hall Recital Debut Thursday, June 9, 2016
South Korean violinist JINJOO CHO, Gold Medalist of the Ninth Quadrennial International Violin Competition of Indianapolis makes her Carnegie Hall recital debut in the Isaac Stern Auditorium on Thursday, June 9, 2016 at 8:00 p.m. She is joined by pianist Hyun Soo Kim in the concert presented by the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis.
Ms. Cho has performed widely throughout the world, performing as a soloist with major orchestras including the Cleveland Orchestra, the Seoul Philharmonic, the orchestras of Montreal and Quebec, and the Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional of Argentina, among many others. She made her Carnegie Hall Concerto debut this past December with the New York String Orchestra and has upcoming performances with orchestras throughout the United States, as well as China, Korea and Brazil. Her recent recital performances with duo partner Hyun Soo Kim have taken her to Chicago, Dallas, Cincinnati, La Jolla, Miami, Bard College, University of Indiana, and the Brattleboro Music Center.
Ms. Cho is committed to Arts Education and audience engagement. She founded a new chamber music program for high school and college students in Cleveland named ENCORE Chamber Music and has been involved as one of the creators of a program in Korea called Classical Revolution Korea, where musicians travel all across Korea to give free concerts and meet audiences in a variety of venues, including cafes.
She has held a part-time position with the Oberlin Conservatory teaching violin and coaching chamber music and has recently been appointed Teacher of Violin at the Cleveland Institute of Music for the 2016-17 academic year. She was born in Seoul, Korea and moved to Cleveland at the age of 14 to study at the Cleveland institute of Music.
She first gained international attention when she garnered the First Grand Prize and Radio Canada’s People’s Choice Award at the 2006 Montreal International Musical Competition at age 17.
PIANIST HYUN SOO KIM has performed extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Italy, Switzerland and Korea. In demand as a collaborative pianist with singers and instrumentalists, he is a member of the Collaborative Piano Staff at the Cleveland Institute of Music and Kent State University. Mr. Kim is also involved as Operations and Admissions Director for ENCORE Chamber Music and has served as a staff pianist with opera companies in Cleveland, Philadelphia and Wilmington.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM: Robert Schumann’s Second Sonata for Violin and Piano is the centerpiece of the Carnegie Hall concert, which includes works of three living composers (Joan Tower, Ellen Taaffe Zwillich and John Corigliano) as well as three women composers (Tower, Zwillich and Clara Schumann).
