Itzhak Perlman Conducts the Juilliard Orchestra in Works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Berlioz Tuesday, December 4 at 8 PM in Avery Fisher Hall

In addition to his many orchestral and recital appearances throughout the world, violinist Itzhak Perlman performs as conductor with leading orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, The Philadelphia Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the symphony orchestras of San Francisco, Dallas, Houston, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Montreal, Atlanta, and Toronto, as well as at the Ravinia and OK Mozart festivals. Internationally, he has conducted the Berlin Philharmonic, Concertgebouw Orchestra, London Philharmonic, the English Chamber Orchestra, and the Israel Philharmonic. Highlights of Mr. Perlman’s 2012-13 season include appearances with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, travel to South America for recitals in Peru, Brazil, and Argentina with pianist and frequent collaborator Rohan De Silva. Other highlights include the release of his new album, Eternal Echoes, on the SONY Classical label and various performances in support of the album, including Boston and New York. Mr. Perlman will make an extensive tour of recitals and orchestral appearances in cities across North America including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Montreal, Kansas City, Sarasota, Las Vegas, and Seattle.
As winner of the 2012 William Kapell International Piano Competition, pianist Yekwon Sunwoo, a native of AnYang, Korea, has performed as soloist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, led by David Lockington. He has performed as soloist with Orchestre National de Belgique, conducted by Marin Alsop; the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie, led by Paul Goodwin; Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Christopher Wilkins; l’Orchestre Philharmonique du Maroc; Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra; and Daegu Orchestra. Mr. Sunwoo made his New York City debut at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in 2009 as winner of the Florida International Piano Competition. Other awards include First Prize in the 2012 Piano Campus International Concours, and a laureate in the 2010 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels. Mr. Sunwoo has performed at the Summit Music Festival, Bowdoin International Music Festival, Toronto Summer Music Academy and Festival, and Music from Angel Fire. His undergraduate studies were at the Curtis Institute of Music where he studied with Seymour Lipkin, and he is currently pursuing a master of music degree at Juilliard, where he studies with Robert McDonald.
About the Juilliard Orchestra Known for its versatility and the freshness of its performances, the Juilliard Orchestra performs frequently in its own New York City series each season, and is a strong partner to Juilliard’s operatic and dance performances. Among the Juilliard Orchestra’s highlights in the 2011-2012 season was their participation in the November 2011 Western Hemisphere Premiere of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ opera, Kommilitonen!, a tale of youthful rebellions throughout the 20th century. Co-commissioned by Juilliard with the Royal Academy of Music (whose world premiere performance took place the previous spring), the opera was a remarkable success on both sides of the Atlantic, garnering attention for its young performers and its topic – an interesting reflection of our times. Anne Manson conducted Juilliard’s highly praised premiere. The Juilliard Orchestra once again joined the Royal Academy of Music this summer 2012, when composer/conductor John Adams returned to Juilliard to conduct a combined orchestra from the two schools in his City Noir at Avery Fisher Hall, as part of the 2012 Lincoln Center Festival. Pianist Imogen Cooper joined them as soloist for a performance of the Ravel Concerto in G, in a program that opened with Respighi’s Feste romane. They performed the same program on the BBC Proms on Monday, July 16, 2012 in the Royal Albert Hall in London. During the 2011-2012 season, Juilliard welcomed several guest conductors leading the Juilliard Orchestra for the first time: David Afkham, Jeffrey Kahane, Jayce Ogren, and Matthias Pintscher, plus returning guest conductor Emmanuel Villaume. Juilliard’s director of orchestral and conducting studies, Alan Gilbert, Music Director of the New York Philharmonic, conducted the Juilliard Orchestra in an Avery Fisher Hall concert.
