MA Top 30 Professional: Anny Guartatanga

Senior Program Coordinator
INTEMPO
Connecticut-based INTEMPO defines its mission as “connecting the dots between intercultural music education and its influence on the overall development of children,” particularly those from immigrant backgrounds.
Affectionately regarded as the “mom” of the organization, Senior Program Coordinator Anny Guartatanga is the primary liaison between staff and the more than 140 students they serve. INTEMPO’s classical and intercultural music programs are realized both in its community conservatory and in partnerships with the Stamford and Norwalk Public Schools, the United Way of Western Connecticut’s Cradle to Career initiative, Carnegie Hall Play USA, and Norwalk Youth Symphony.
A native of Ecuador, Guartatanga was herself an immigrant; she focused on accounting in high school but considered piano her life’s anchor. Through INTEMPO, she is passing on her music-focused passion to children between the ages of 6 and 17, including her two boys, both of whom are musicians.
“Having experienced what classical music meant in my life, it was clear to me that I wanted my boys to have the same opportunity.” A tireless worker, Guartatanga makes herself available around the clock, routinely helping families connect not only to teachers and the music of other cultures but also to housing, food, and other vital resources.
Founded in 2009 as a bridge between the arts sector of Fairfield County, CT, and immigrants and communities of color, INTEMPO has received numerous local and national awards as well as grants from Carnegie Hall and the Sphinx Organization and was twice a finalist for an honor from the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.
“Knowing that we are doing good things to change kids’ lives [brings] me joy and a feeling of satisfaction,” Guartatanga says.
