Talking Choral Music- A Professional Choral Singer's Life

November 13, 2020 | By Andrea Goodman
Director

What does it take to make it in New York? Newly released Episode 4 of the YouTube interview series Talking Choral Music features four professional singers who have made a living singing choral music. Hosted by Andrea Goodman, director of the Cantilena Chamber Choir in Western Massachusetts, “Talking Choral Music” features noted composers, conductors and business leaders in the choral community.

Join four professional choral musicians in a lively discussion about making it as paid choral artists in New York City. Nancy Wertsch is a choral contractor, singer and composer who has contracted for the Bard Festival, the Verbier Festival under the baton of James Levine, the New York Virtuoso singers under the baton of Harold Rosenbaum and more. Mukund and Mary Marathe had very long associations with the Gregg Smith Singers and many other professional choruses in New York. Roosevelt Credit was featured as a “Fisherman” in the 2012 Tony Award Winning and Grammy Nominated Production of The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess on Broadway. He has performed on and off Broadway, playing several roles in the Tony Award winning and national touring companies of Harold Prince’s Show Boat and also performs in churches and professional choruses in the city. Together they share what skills have been necessary to get work, and how to survive when the “gigs” are far and few between. Their stories are fascinating and inspirational to every singer trying to make it in a big city.
