16-Year-Old Juilliard Pianist and Composer Taige Wang Launched MusicOn InterArts Festival
NEW YORK — As fall settles over New York, the city’s performing arts scene comes alive with the start of a new concert season.
On the afternoon of October 3, 2026, the MusicOn InterArts Festival launched its new season at The Blanc in Manhattan with a captivating recital by 16-year-old Juilliard pianist and composer Taige Wang. Seamlessly fusing multimedia presentation, virtuoso classical solos, contemporary vocal art, and original chamber compositions, the performance vividly demonstrated the vibrant future of classical music. Renowned New York music critic Matei Varga praised the young artist in his review, writing: “At only 16 years old, Mr. Wang is already a captivating presence and a formidable talent… The seeds of greatness are definitely rooted in Taige Wang’s soil.”
The audience brought together notable figures from the classical music community, including Taige’s composition mentor—renowned composer, Resident Lecturer at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (CMS), and CME Resident Composer Bruce Adolphe—alongside New Jersey Youth Symphony (NJYS) Artistic Director Helen Cha-Pyo,both attending to show their support for these exceptional young musicians.
As the centerpiece of the event, Wang showcased an innovative vision that reimagined traditional concert formats right from the start. The concert opened with a short film featuring a script written and narrated by Wang, accompanied by his own piano performance.
Stepping up to the piano, the young artist—who studies under legendary pedagogue Veda Kaplinsky—warmly introduced each piece with insightful commentary on its historical context and inspiration, effortlessly bridging the gap between performer and audience.
The program's first half highlighted Wang’s commanding technique and refined artistic sensibility. From the crystal-clear Baroque phrasing of Scarlatti’s keyboard sonatas to the intimate poetry of Granados’s La Maya y el Ruiseñor, and culminating in the dramatic grandeur of Liszt’s virtuosic Reminiscences de Norma, Wang demonstrated a maturity and depth of musical understanding far beyond his years.
The second half shifted focus to contemporary creation and collaborative spirit. Wang first partnered with tenor James Kil in a performance of a vocal work by Yiming Wu. He then premiered his original chamber composition, Trois Nouvelles, inviting violinist Chanhee Jin, clarinetist Michael Sun, and bassoonist Felix Zhou to join him on stage. Together, these gifted musicians from top conservatories brought vivid narrative commitment to translating literary and sci-fi themes into evocative soundscapes. The New York audience responded with great enthusiasm.
Varga also praised the work for displaying “a mastery in handling ideas and a gift for subtle voicing which are hard to find even in the work of more experienced composers.”
The performance highlighted a new generation of musicians who honor classical traditions while bringing fresh perspectives to the art form.
The recital reached a triumphant finale as Wang joined fellow pianist Andrew Huang for a four-hand performance of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue in a vibrant eight-minute arrangement by Wang himself. The duo delivered a thrilling performance packed with playful exuberance, explosive energy, and intuitive chemistry.
More than a showcase of Taige Wang’s artistry as a pianist and composer, the recital reflected his collaborative spirit and his ability to bring talented young musicians together. Supported by fellow musicians, mentors, and music lovers, the afternoon was a celebration of individual artistry, shared musical passion, and the promise of a new generation of classical musicians.
