August 23 – September 19, 2026 | Bucharest, Romania
“a global artistic exchange” – The New York Times
Bucharest, Romania (June 17, 2026) – The George Enescu International Competition announces a record number of registrations following the deadline for instrumental applications for its 2026 edition: 645 young musicians from 55 countries have registered for the instrumental categories of Violin, Cello, and Piano, making this the largest pool of instrumental applicants in the competition’s history, dating back to its first edition in 1958.
The figures presented at this time are preliminary and apply exclusively to the instrumental categories of the competition. Registration for the Composition section remains open, with the deadline for submitting applications set for June 30, 2026 (11:59pm Romanian time). Apply for the Composition Division here.
This year’s 645 candidates come from 55 countries across five continents, demonstrating the truly global nature of the competition. The countries represented include China (128 contestants); South Korea (116 contestants); the United States (56 contestants); Japan (45 contestants); Germany (33 contestants); Romania (30 competitors); and Italy (24 competitors), along with France, Taiwan, Spain, Poland, Switzerland, Australia, Austria, Canada, Hong Kong, Venezuela, Cuba, Mexico, Denmark, Montenegro, the Czech Republic, Chile, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, Singapore, Finland, and more.
In addition, the George Enescu International Competition continues to strengthen its role as a leading platform for artistic development with an expanded masterclass program in 2026, broadening its educational scope to include conducting, instrumental performance, and composition.
Held in Bucharest from August 24–28, 2026, these masterclasses will bring together young musicians from around the world in a rigorous setting combining mentorship, practice, and real performance experience. Designed as a natural extension of the Enescu Competition, the masterclass program reflects the George Enescu ideal of the complete artist: performer, creator, and educator. Applications for all masterclass programs, including the newly launched composition masterclass, remain open until June 30, 2026, at 11:59pm (Romania time). Detailed information regarding eligibility, repertoire requirements, and the application process is available on the Competition’s official website.
Again led by Artistic Director Cristian Macelaru, who returns following the success of the 2024 curriculum, the masterclasses will offer participants direct access to top-level artistic guidance. Musicians will benefit from personalized feedback, orchestra rehearsals, and performance opportunities, working closely with internationally acclaimed artists.
In a major addition to the 2026 edition, the composition masterclass will further expand the educational dimension of the Enescu Competition. Three emerging composers will be selected to develop their works under the guidance of prominent figures in contemporary music, culminating in live performances of their compositions during a special pre-concert event at the Romanian Athenaeum.
The mentors of the composition masterclass will be Zygmunt Krauze, Sarah Kirkland Snider, and Steven Mackey. An influential Polish composer and pianist, Zygmunt Krauze brings decades of international experience as a creator, educator, and former president of the International Society for Contemporary Music, with a body of work deeply engaged in social and human themes. Sarah Kirkland Snider, one of today’s most acclaimed American composers, is known for her vividly expressive and narratively driven music, widely performed by leading orchestras and ensembles worldwide. Steven Mackey, celebrated for blending classical composition with the energy of rock and improvisation, offers a distinctive voice shaped by his genre-crossing works and numerous international honors.
The conducting masterclass offers participants a unique immersion in hands-on orchestral leadership. Open to the public free of charge at the Romanian Radio Hall (Sala Radio), the sessions will provide audiences with a rare behind-the-scenes perspective on the creative dialogue between conductor, orchestra, and mentor. Six emerging conductors will work alongside the Romanian Youth Orchestra, while three will be selected to conduct the final concert at the Romanian Athenaeum on August 28, 2026. The aftermovie of the 2024 Enescu conducting masterclass is now available to watch online.
Designed to support the next generation of performers, the instrumental masterclasses create an inspiring environment for artistic growth, technical refinement, and professional development. Participants will have the exceptional opportunity to work directly with Cristian Macelaru, gaining valuable insights into interpretation, musicianship, and artistic identity.
Participation in the masterclass is tuition-free for selected candidates. Applicants are required to pay only the application fee, while travel and living expenses are covered individually. Active participants will receive one night of accommodation on the date of their scheduled performance.
“The masterclasses of the George Enescu International Competition are designed to create meaningful encounters between emerging artists and established musicians, offering a space for learning, dialogue, and artistic discovery,” said Cristian Macelaru, Artistic Director of the George Enescu International Festival and Competition. “Whether through conducting, performance, or composition, participants are encouraged to develop their own artistic voice while embracing the discipline, curiosity, and generosity that define great musicianship. By bringing together creation, interpretation, and leadership, these masterclasses reflect the values that George Enescu embodied throughout his life and offer young artists an inspiring path toward artistic excellence.”
Applications are open internationally, with no residency restrictions. Candidates for the conducting masterclass must be born after August 1, 1991, while those applying for instrumental performance and composition must be born after August 1, 2001. The application deadline is June 30, 2026. Apply for masterclasses here.
Initiated in 2024, the masterclasses have rapidly evolved into one of the most dynamic components of the Enescu Competition, redefining it as a comprehensive ecosystem for artistic growth. Beyond technical training, the program also integrates elements of leadership, communication, and well-being, recognizing that artistic excellence is closely connected to personal balance, resilience, and long-term professional sustainability.
Hosted at the Romanian Athenaeum, Sala Radio, and the National University of Music Bucharest, the masterclasses are among the most significant educational initiatives for classical music in Central and Eastern Europe, further positioning Bucharest as an international cultural hub.
Through this expanded program, the George Enescu International Competition reaffirms its commitment to shaping the future of classical music by investing in the next generation of artists.
The George Enescu International Competition is held under the High Patronage of the President of Romania and is funded by the Romanian Government through the Ministry of Culture.

About the George Enescu International Competition
Organized for the first time in 1958, simultaneously with the George Enescu International Festival, the Enescu Competition operates as an international launching platform for future world-renowned musicians. Additionally, the Competition promotes the compositions of the great Romanian musician and composer among the new generation of artists worldwide, thus being a natural complement to the George Enescu International Festival, Romania’s most important international cultural event.
Since 2002, the Enescu Competition has been a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions, being the only classical music competition in Romania organized in accordance with the standards and status of the Federation. Starting in 2014, the Enescu Competition became a distinct event from the Festival and is organized every two years (alternatively with the years in which the Festival is organized).
The producer of the Competition is the Government of Romania, through the Ministry of Culture. The organizer is ARTEXIM, an institution under the Ministry of Culture. The George Enescu International Competition takes place under the High Patronage of the President of Romania. Organizing each edition is supported by institutional partners and sponsors from the private, artistic, and academic environments.
