The first single - El amor brujo: III. Canción del amor dolido is out now
This new recording from Gustavo Dudamel and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela delves into the multifaceted sound world of Manuel de Falla, bringing together three of his most celebrated works: El amor brujo, Noches en los jardines de España, and El sombrero de tres picos. Together, they offer three distinct yet complementary visions of Andalusia, illuminating Falla’s engagement with Spanish musical identity.
Recorded in 2025 in celebration of the 50th anniversary of El Sistema, the transformative Venezuelan music education programme that has shaped generations of musicians including Dudamel himself, Alma y Fuego builds on a series of acclaimed collaborations between Dudamel, the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezeula, and Platoon. The orchestra's previous recordings on the label have garnered international recognition, including a 2026 GRAMMY® nomination for Best Orchestral Performance for their recording of Boléro, underscoring the ensemble’s continued artistic evolution and global impact.
Recognised for his deep connection to Latin musical traditions, Gustavo Dudamel brings a distinctive perspective to Falla’s music. Dudamel says “Falla’s music comes from a place of deep truth, and exploring it with the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, Pasión Vega and Javier Perianes was a special opportunity to engage directly with that truth. It is a living music rooted in the spirit of the people and in the expressive power of cante jondo, which is inseparable from Andalusia. In Alma y fuego, we discover three distinct soundscapes of Falla’s world, from the ritual and mystery of 'El amor brujo,' to the poetic atmosphere of 'Noches en los jardines de España,' to the vibrant theatrical energy of 'El sombrero de tres picos.' For me, the purity of this music doesn’t just evoke Spain; instead, it forms a vibrantly-colored landscape we can step into, live in, breathe in, touch, and taste.”
At the heart of the album lies El amor brujo, inspired by the legendary dancer Pastora Imperio. Originally conceived as a “gitanería,” the work draws deeply on the expressive tradition of cante jondo - the soulful, emotionally charged song of Andalusia. In this recording, Pasión Vega brings an authentic vocal presence, capturing the spirit Falla described as the “soul of the gypsy race.” The performance follows the definitive 1925 ballet-pantomime version, premiered in Paris under the composer’s own direction.
In Noches en los jardines de España, Falla turns to a more impressionistic palette. Rather than a conventional piano concerto, the work unfolds as a series of nocturnes, conjuring the atmosphere of southern Spain through shimmering textures, refined orchestration, and subtle dance-inflected rhythms, performed by Pianist Javier Perianes.
The programme concludes with El sombrero de tres picos, a vibrant ballet that reflects Falla’s fascination with Spain’s regional traditions. While rooted in Andalusia, the score incorporates elements such as the fandango, soleá, and jota, blending folk influences into a theatrical work. This recording presents the Second Suite, culminating in its three exhilarating dances.
Alma y Fuego is a vivid journey through Andalusia as imagined by one of Spain’s greatest composers. These performances highlight Falla’s ability to transform popular and traditional elements into sophisticated concert works, and showcase Dudamel’s gift for illuminating music that thrives on rhythm, colour and storytelling.
