ROCHESTER, NY — Young, emerging singers in the early phases of their careers seeking opportunities to perform and grow artistically now have a new competition.

For the first time in its history—the Rochester Oratorio Society (ROS) presents a dedicated Emerging Artist Competition “Joseph Eduardo.” In the past, a single Emerging Artist prize was included in the annual ROS Rochester International Vocal Competition (RIVC).

“ROS strives to recognize the abundance of vocal talent and the importance of providing a platform for these artists,” says ROS Artistic Director Eric Townell, who this year celebrates his 20th anniversary in that position. “We are absolutely delighted to host an Emerging Artists Competition as its own competitive entity.”

The competition application is open only online through Sunday, April 12 for college students, recent graduates, and early-career professional artists ages 18-35. Complete application information can be found at: https://rossings.org/events/emerging-artist-competition-details/

The virtual first round culminates in a concert featuring the top three finalists competing before a live audience on Saturday, May 16 at 7:30 pm at the Hochstein Performance Hall in Rochester, NY. In addition to performing live, the top three winners will receive cash prizes of $1000 (First Prize), $750 (Second Prize), and $500 (Third Prize).

Applicants will be judged by Townell and Jonathan Beyer, an internationally recognized singer, Director of the Chautauqua Opera Conservatory and 2011 RIVC winner. Finalists will also be heard by eight external reviewers for potential professional engagements.

“Audience members can expect an exciting evening,” notes Beyer. “The three singers will offer a wide range of voice types and repertoire. It’s a perfect way to hear operatic variety in short selections, plus the thrill of hearing the winners announced live!”

The Emerging Artist Competition was established in memory of the late Joseph Eduardo, ROS tenor and beloved member of Rochester’s musical community. “Joe was known for his sharp ear, generous spirit, and a deep commitment to the arts,” noted Townell. “Naming this award in Joe’s honor reflects his lifelong passion for nurturing young talent and building bridges between artists and audiences.”

Artists may apply here through April 12, 2026.
