Omer Meir Wellber in Hamburg
Allow me to give you some insight on the past few months of the conductor Omer Meir Wellber as he began his 5-year tenure as new General Music Director of the Hamburg State Opera and the Philharmonic Orchestra on 1st September this year.
-
His first philharmonic subscription concert took place in September as part of a whole season ranging with repertoire that stands under the motto of "ZeitSpiele / Playing with Temporal Concepts – inspiring musical interlocutions between past and present. The concept transcends the boundaries of the ordinary, going far beyond merely performing new works loosely associated with “classics” – instead, original works by great masters are adapted: contemporary composers have been commissioned to create new works to be interpolated into a classical work instead of one of the original movements." A key feature are Wellber’s pre-concert talks where he personally explores the evening’s works, fostering dialogue and deepening the audience’s connection to the music—an essential part of the "ZeitSpiele" experience. More info here.

You can hear the concert here on NDR featuring Beethoven’s piano concerto No. 3 performed by Stephen Hough who is also the composer here in this program, re-writing the second movement – let yourself be taken into this experiment and see how this influences the listening experience of the original Beethoven! In the second half then Bruckner’s 7th symphony.
The first major opera production of the combined tenure of Tobias Kratzer (Intendant) and Wellber - the new leadership of the house - is Schumann’s rarely performed oratorio Das Paradies und die Peri – to be seen here on ARTE premiered on 27 September.
Wellber not only got to know the house and orchestra through the above but also by conducting revivals of Salome and Cosi fan tutte (talk with Wellber on Instagram) as well as initiating a new festival with the orchestra, called BLUE WEEK which combines unique works and programmes on the one hand, while also showcasing special qualities of the orchestra’s musicians on the other. Impressions of the different concerts on the orchestra`s Instagram highlight "DIE BLAUE WOCHE" here.
The next stop for him now is Vienna to work with the Wiener Symphoniker in the Konzerthaus with 2 concerts together with Yuja Wang. On the programm, on 4 December (Prokofiev's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 2 and Elgar's Symphony No. 1) and on 5 December (Prokofiev's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 2 and Beethoven's Symphony No. 2).
Only then to finish off the year 2025 in Hamburg with concerts in the Elbphilharmonie with Haydn and Glanert (= ZeitSpiel 4) and the New Year’s Eve concert at 11 a.m. on 31 December in the Elbphilharmonie. The ZeitSpiele concerts redefine tradition. In this specific program, Detlev Glanert’s new composition - inspired by Haydn’s Farewell Symphony - is performed alongside the original, creating a dynamic dialogue between past and present. Wellber’s interpretation brings Haydn’s timeless genius into today’s world, while Glanert’s work anchors it firmly in our contemporary experience.

Next to this, there are extracurricular specials that have happened in these past 2 months in Hamburg addressing new audiences, for example: a special concert in the Tivoli Theatre in Hamburg with improvisations on all kinds of music – this theatre will feature a new collaboration in March with the Hamburg State Opera on bringing to life a new version of Peter und der Wolf, adapted to the red light district of St. Pauli in Hamburg. Omer Meir Wellber took on school concerts in addition to public talks before, during and after performances in both the opera and the Elbphilharmonie and much more – enlivening both the Opera House in many different ways on performance evenings and also adding encounters between the audience and the musicians to the subscription concerts in the Elbphilharmonie.
