Science Meets Symphony: NEP’s Annual Family Concert Showcases Black Hole Symphony Collaboration
Boston, MA — The New England Philharmonic (NEP) proudly presents its annual Family Concert, featuring the world premiere of the orchestral version of Black Hole Symphony, a stunning fusion of science and sound created in collaboration with the Multiverse Concert Series, Museum of Science, Boston and Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian. Composed by Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian Resident Composer David Ibbett, this groundbreaking work transforms the astrophysics of black holes into a rich, immersive musical experience.
The concert takes place on Sunday, December 14, 2025, at 3:00pm at the Tsai Performance Center of Boston University, and includes a pre-concert talk by Sheperd Doeleman, Harvard astrophysicist and director of the Event Horizon Telescope, who will share insights into the science behind the music. The symphony traces the life cycle of black holes—from their formation, to their dramatic interactions and roles at the hearts of galaxies—through orchestral storytelling and visuals created by the animators of the Charles Hayden Planetarium, Museum of Science Boston.
Also on the program are concerto performances by Young Artist Competition winners Maggie Bai and Valerie Bai.
In keeping with the family-friendly theme, the event will also feature post-concert instrument petting zoo and interactive science booths, offering hands-on opportunities to explore music and space.
“This concert celebrates the creative spirit that defines NEP,” notes Tianhui Ng, NEP Music Director. “We’re thrilled to bring together cutting-edge science, adventurous music, and emerging talent in a program that invites families to experience the universe in a whole new way.”
The Family Concert is part of NEP’s 2025–2026 season, which includes premieres, collaborations, and community engagement initiatives that reflect the orchestra’s commitment to bold programming and accessibility.
