New York, NY (October 29, 2025) — The genre-defying chamber ensemble yMusic returns to Carnegie Hall on Thursday, November 13, 2025 at 7:30 PM in Zankel Hall, joined by four-time GRAMMY®-nominated singer-songwriter Emily King for an evening that bridges classical, pop, and experimental sound worlds. The program features the New York premiere of composer Gabriella Smith’s Aquatic Ecology, co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall; a collaborative set with Emily King; and Judd Greenstein’s Together, a vibrant reflection on connection and resilience.

Originally conceived for a 2020 premiere, Judd Greenstein’s Together was reimagined during the pandemic to capture both isolation and unity. “The six players don’t need to be in sync, but move through the movement as a kind of cloud – together, but not precisely together,” says Greenstein. The work evolves toward joyful cohesion, reflecting yMusic’s long friendship with the composer and his role in shaping the ensemble’s identity. Watch the music video for Together, released by yMusic on New Amsterdam Records in 2022.

yMusic’s collaboration with Emily King began in 2019, uniting King’s radiant soul-pop artistry with the ensemble’s chamber textures. Their set features co-written material, new arrangements of King’s originals, and reimagined yMusic works. “Emily has pushed us to explore different facets of our compositional voice, finding new sounds and textures,” the ensemble shares. “She’s a true kindred spirit.”

The centerpiece of the program, Gabriella Smith’s Aquatic Ecology immerses listeners in the soundscapes of the ocean through underwater field recordings and live ensemble performance. Smith’s work, described by the LA Times as “an outright sensation,” transforms coral reefs, melting ice, and whale song into a symphonic meditation on climate and connection. The 40-minute work marks Smith’s third collaboration with yMusic and her most ambitious to date.

About yMusic
yMusic is a genre-leading American chamber ensemble. Now in its seventeenth season, the group is renowned for its innovative and collaborative spirit. Since their inception, yMusic has had a unique mission: to work on both sides of the classical/popular music divide, without sacrificing rigor, virtuosity, charisma, or style. They were recently praised by NPR Music as “deeply, profoundly skilled. They’ve formed a language all their own.”

Named for "Generation Y,” yMusic and their cohort of composer-collaborators, who include Andrew Norman, Missy Mazzoli, Nico Muhly, Marcos Balter, and Gabriella Smith, have come to represent the vanguard of American Contemporary Music. Simultaneously, yMusic has been tapped to lend their orchestral sound and instantly-recognizable style to recordings and concert projects by a dizzying array of popular artists from ANOHNI to John Legend to Paul Simon.

yMusic is Alex Sopp, flute; Mark Dover, clarinet; CJ Camerieri, trumpet; Rob Moose, violin; Nadia Sirota, viola; and Gabriel Cabezas, cello. The group was founded by Rob and CJ in 2008, who chose its unique instrumentation based on their friendships and the players' adaptability. The yMusic configuration has quickly become a staple orchestration for composers and ensembles inspired by the group’s work.

In 2023, the ensemble released their first album of self-composed work titled YMUSIC. Written collaboratively by all six musicians, YMUSIC represents a creative breakthrough for the ensemble. “They’ve transcended all the conventions that they were trained in” (NPR Music), presenting "one of the most exciting and confident chamber music releases of the year” (Strings Magazine). yMusic also launched an ongoing collaboration, Stories x yMusic, a series of filmed performances and streaming singles featuring prominent artists performing with the ensemble in an intimate acoustic setting, such as Bruno Major, Amy Allen, and Rufus Wainwright.

For their inaugural commission as a composition collective, yMusic was enlisted by the Park Avenue Armory to compose an original score for renowned choreographer Kyle Abraham’s production Dear Lord, Make Me Beautiful. This momentous collaboration was hailed by The New Yorker as “a deeply personal portrait” that "works organically, seeping into us through skin and eyes and ears. And it is a beauty." The production, in which yMusic performed the score live, featured Abraham alongside a company of seventeen dancers. The world premiere run of ten performances took place in the Armory's expansive Drill Hall in December 2024.

In addition to their most recent album, yMusic has released four full-length albums of commissioned music: 2020’s Ecstatic Science, 2017’s First, 2014’s Balance Problems, and 2011’s Beautiful MechanicalTime Out New York’s “#1 Classical Record of the Year.” They can be found performing around the world in a variety of contexts and have performed in venues such as the Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, and Madison Square Garden.

King has toured extensively, most recently headlining her own European tour, as well as performing alongside Norah Jones on her Visions tour, and Jacob Collier on his North American Djesse Vol. 4 tour.
