World Premiere of James Lee III's 'Concerto in A'

October 19, 2025 | By Naturally Sharp Inc.

An exciting new piano concerto by James Lee III - "Concerto in A"- will have its World Premiere with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra on Wednesday, October 22nd with pianist Jeffrey Biegel, and Music Director Matthew Kraemer. This marks Mr. Biegel's fifth appearance with the orchestra. His first performance was in the 1990s with Peter Bay conducting Beethoven's "Concerto no. 5, 'Emperor'", followed with Lowell Liebermann's "Concerto no. 3, Opus 95" in March 2009 with Carlos Miguel Prieto conducting, the World Premiere of Ellen Taaffe Zwilich's "Shadows" in October 2011 again with Maestro Prieto, and the World Premiere of Jake Runestad's "Dreams of the Fallen" for Piano, Orchestra and Chorus with James Paul conducting at the National WWII Museum on Veterans Day, 2013.

Mr. Biegel created the "Concerto in A" project with James Lee III to celebrate the centennial of George Gershwin's "Concerto in F", premiered on December 3, 1925, with Walter Damrosch conducting the New York Symphony Society, with Mr. Gershwin at the piano. The concerto was commissioned by Mr. Damrosch and the New York Symphony Society. Mr. Lee chose 'A' for 'America', tipping his hat to Mr. Gershwin with subtle musical reflections in a brilliant, original musical landscape. Mr. Lee's concerto is commissioned by the Billy Rose Foundation and James L. Layne. The Hudson Valley Philharmonic, with Music Director Andre Raphel, will also present Mr. Lee's "Concerto in A" in May 2026, with Mr. Biegel as soloist.
