Biting Musical Commentary
Looking to the past in order to better understand the present, in the opening performance of its 71st season, The Boston Camerata continues to explore age-old themes of justice and corruption with satirical works from the Middle Ages.
For immediate release (Boston, MA) – Returning home after its second triumphal tour this season at major European festivals, The Boston Camerata is preparing its 71st Boston season. Please see the entire season here.
The season opens on October 25, 2025 at 4pm at the Friends Meeting at Cambridge with City of Fools: Medieval Songs of Rule and Misrule. The Camerata continues its exploration of satirical works from medieval Europe, including the fable/songs of the great Provençal troubadour and satirist Peire Cardenal, as well as pungent excerpts from Carmina Burana and the Roman de Fauvel.
“We hope that hearing how corrupt rulers were mocked in the thirteenth century will give us some perspective on the twenty-first,” says Camerata Artistic Director, Anne Azéma. “There will be laughter, hopefully, but also some serious reflection on the nature of justice, all within a context of beautiful and rousing music.” Certainly, be prepared for a surprise or two along the way!
Our cast of six – singers Anne Azéma, Michael Barrett, Ryan Lustgarten, and John Taylor Ward with instrumentalists Shira Kammen and Dan Meyers – all at the top of their field and regular collaborators with the ensemble, will transport you to a timeless place. They will be supported by the young voices of the Boston City Singers: there is no age to denounce the machinations of bad leaders!
