San Francisco – Award-winning SF contemporary music group Ensemble for These Times is excited to announce our 18th Home Season, “Women Crossing/Liminality,” the culmination of our two-year initiative exploring women’s immigration and identity, along with a  new recording, plus our first East Coast tour. Innovation, diversity and collegiality continue to mark E4TT’s programming, beginning with the Home Season’s opening concert, "Lines, Circles Spirals," on November 7, 2025, at Old First Concerts in San Francisco, featuring works by Karim Al-Zand, Clarice AssadAnna Clyne, inti figgis-vizueta, and Hannah Ishizaki in conversation with Bohuslav Martinu’s String Duo No. 1. Three collaborations will follow: the seventh edition of E4TT’s popular annual Music by Women and Nonbinary Composers series, "After Sleepwalking,” on January 25, 2026, at the Piedmont Piano Company, featuring the winner in the 2025 E4TT/ Luna Composition Lab Call for Scores; the “E4TT/RMF New Music Piano Summit,” on March 1, 2026, a new initiative with the Ross McKee Foundation featuring a Call for Scores for piano four-hands performed by E4TT emerita pianist extraordinaire Dale Tsang and RMF laureates; and the season’s title program on April 17, 2026 at the Bowes Center in SF, E4TT’s sixth multimedia collaboration with the SF Conservatory of Music Technology and Applied Composition Department, with four World Premieres: commissions by Juhi Bansal, Vivian Fung, and Pamela Z, and the winning piece from the E4TT/TAC student competition. E4TT will close the season on May 16, 2026, with El Tiempo Latine, a free concert at the Center for New Music in San Francisco, celebrating the release of E4TT’s sixth album, music by modern Latine composers. All concerts will be offered in hybrid format for both in-person and livestream attendance.

With many thanks to Abigail…

Congratulations to E4TT core cellist Abigail Monroe, who celebrated her marriage in 2025 and moved to New Orleans! Not to worry, to her many fans, though: she hasn’t left the group. We are immensely grateful that she will continue with E4TT as our regular substitute cellist and also as our fabulous Social Media Assistant, a second role she has filled with panache since joining the ensemble in 2021. Thank you, Abigail, for everything you have done for E4TT and will continue to do. We remain ever thankful for her passionate and sensitive musical contributions, and her engaging images and posts on social media.

E4TT is excited to announce that Megan Chartier (bio below) has joined E4TT as our new core cellist! We felt so lucky to have her as a guest cellist this past season on “In Motion” and “Women in Transit,” as well as for “Transformations” in 2023/2024, during which her stage presence, commitment to the music, and vibrant, virtuosic playing  brought many compliments from E4TT’s fans and audiences. In addition to her eloquent musicianship, we are also lucky to benefit from Megan’s talents in the visual arts, as she is also our 2025-26 season Graphic Designer. We are so looking forward to this next season with Megan on board!

ABOUT ENSEMBLE FOR THESE TIMES

Winner of The American Prize in 2021 for Chamber Music Performance, ENSEMBLE FOR THESE TIMES (E4TT) consists of award-winning soprano/Artistic Executive Director Nanette McGuinness, cellist Megan Chartier, pianist Margaret Halbig, and co-founder/Senior Artistic Advisor composer David Garner. E4TT made its international debut in Berlin in 2012; was sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Budapest for a four-city tour of Hungary in 2014; and performed at the Krakow Culture Festival in 2016 and 2022, and at the Conservatorio Teresa Berganza in Madrid in 2017. In California, E4TT has performed at the Paderewski Festival, the LAMOTH, UCLA, and in the Bay Area at the German Consulate General, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Old First Concerts, JCC Peninsula, Trinity Chamber Concerts, and Noontime Concerts, among other venues.

 

E4TT’s five albums have all medaled in the Global Music Awards: “Emigres & Exiles in Hollywood” (2024) featuring music by some of the talented émigré composers who fled persecution during WWII for Hollywood, changing movie music as we know it; “The Guernica Project” (2022), commemorating the 85th anniversary of the horrific carpet bombing of civilians and Picasso’s masterwork in response; “Once/Memory/Night: Paul Celan” (2020), honoring the centennial of the seminal 20th-century poet; “The Hungarians: From Rózsa to Justus” (2018), with works by Hungarian émigré Miklós Rózsa, and three of his compatriots who perished in the Holocaust; and “Surviving: Women’s Words,” (2016), new music to poetry by women Holocaust survivors. The group recorded its sixth album, of music by Latine composers, in summer 2025 and launched the second season of its podcast of conversations with underrepresented creatives, “For Good Measure,” in 2024.

 

 ABOUT E4TT’S 18th BAY AREA HOME SEASON

What is “liminality”? The word comes from the Latin limen, meaning “threshold,” but in 1964 anthropologist Victor Turner used the term to identify the three stages that make up rites of passage: separation (preliminal), transition (liminal), and incorporation (post-liminal). These rites—ceremonies or rituals marking individual milestones, such as passage into adulthood or marriage—represent the symbolic detachment by an individual from an existing point in the social structure to another. “Liminality,” the middle stage, is the in-between time when a person has let go of their original status but has not yet fully reached their new status, a state of being not one thing or yet the other. In all of its richness, ‘liminality’ applies to the middle ground between traditional gender roles of masculinity and femininity that so many women occupy today, and also to immigrant crossings, when one leaves her homeland for a new life somewhere else, the diasporic unknown. Liminality is also in the space when a person is ‘in transition,’ along the spectrum from one gender to the other. In all of these cases, there is movement, from here to there, from this to that, but “liminality” is the uncertain center.

 

In fall of 2024, Ensemble for These Times commenced a musical exploration of these notions of transition through an exciting two-year project, “Women Crossing/Liminality,” focusing on women’s immigration and identity. For the group’s 17th annual Home Season E4TT performed “Women in Transit,” five concerts presented live at various Bay Area concert venues. This coming season will be the culmination of the project with five more concerts. All programs will be presented in person and livestreamed online. For self-presented concerts, the livestream will be free, with no one turned away from attending in person due to lack of funds. Programming for E4TT’s 2025/26 Home Season will be characterized by diversity,  innovation, and collegiality as follows:

 

November 7, 2025: “Lines, Circles, and Spirals

E4TT will kick off its Home Season on November 7, 2025 at Old First Concerts in San Francisco, with “Lines, Circles, and Spirals,” featuring 21st century works that engage with the geometrical theme of the concert title (lines, circles, and spirals) in conversation with Duo No.1  by Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) for violin and cello, H. 157 (1927): “Displaced Lines” for solo piano by Latin Grammy® nominee, Brazilian-American composer Clarice Assad (b. 1978), “Fits Starts” for amplified cello and tape by Grammy® nominee, British-American composer,  Anna Clyne (b. 1980), “Ammonite” for piano trio by ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composer Award winner,  Japanese-American composer Hannah Ishizaki (b. 2000), “Six Bagatelles” for piano trio by Barlow Prize winner, Canadian-American composer Karim Al-Zand (b. 1970), “Cavities” (2024) for piano trio by Iranian-American composer Niloufar Nourbakhsh (b. 1992), and “the motion between three worlds” for solo cello by inti figgis-vizueta (b. 1993).

Guest violinist Maya Victoria will join soprano Nanette McGuinness, cellist Megan Chartier, and pianist Margaret Halbig. The concert will also be livestreamed on O1C’s YouTube channel.

 

January 25, 2025: “After Sleepwalking: Music by Women and Nonbinary Composers

E4TT’s annual audience favorite—a concert of music by women and nonbinary composers—returns in its seventh iteration with a program featuring “Divide and Concur” (2022) by Elisa Kain Johnson (b. 2004), the winning piece from the 2025 E4TT/ Luna Composition Call for Scores, the first project in our second two-year collaboration with Luna Composition Lab, which is also part of their 10th Anniversary Celebration. The program will feature “A Thousand Mornings” (2020) for piano trio by Anna Clyne (b. 1980), “For the Sleepwalkers” (2023) for narrator and piano trio by G. Schirmer Prize winner, Korean-American composer Jungyoon Wie (b. 1990), “Cinq Petits Morceaux” (2015) for solo piano by SF Conservatory of Music graduate S.A. Workman (b. 1967), “The Light After” (2021) for solo cello by Andrew Yee (b. 1984), and “Tres Lent” (1994) and its companion piece, “Wild Run” (2018) for cello and piano by Joan Tower (b. 1938).

E4TT (soprano Nanette McGuinness, cellist Megan Chartier, and pianist Margaret Halbig) will be joined by violinist Maya Victoria. The concert will be presented at the Piedmont Piano Company in Oakland, and will also be livestreamed at no charge (donations welcome) on E4TT’s YouTube channel.

  

March 1, 2026: “E4TT/RMF New Music Piano Summit

In collaboration with the Ross McKee Foundation, E4TT emerita pianist extraordinaire Dale Tsang and RMF laureates will perform a program of works chosen from E4TT’s 2025 Call for Scores for piano four-hands, which took place in July 2025 and yielded 43 scores by 37 composers. The winning works for the program will be announced by August 20, 2025. The concert will be performed live at the Berkeley Piano Club and livestreamed at no charge (donations welcome and most appreciated) on E4TT’s YouTube channel.

 

April 17, 2026: "Women Crossing/ Liminality

The highlight of E4TT’s 2025/26 season will be Women Crossing/Liminality, our annual commissions concert and sixth multimedia collaboration with the Technology and Applied Composition (TAC) Department at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. The program will also be the culmination of our two-year project, “Women Crossing/Liminality,” an innovative exploration of women’s immigration and identity. The concert will feature three commissioned World Premieres—a new work for voice, cello, and piano by Opera America Discovery winner, Indian-Hongkongese composer Juhi Bansal (b. 1992), and two pieces with found-object percussion—one also with bass flute by JUNO Award winner, Chinese-American composer Vivian Fung (b. 1975), and one also  with violin, cello, and tape by world-famous Rome Prize-winning Black composer, Pamela Z (b. 1956)—along with the World Premiere of  the winner in the E4TT/TAC student multimedia composition competition with the San Francisco Conservatory’s Technical and Applied Composition Department. Three more works will round out the program: “say it in your heart,say it in your sleep”(2023) for solo piano by 2022 Pulitzer Prize Finalist, Hawaiian composer Leilehua Lanzilotti (b. 1985), “Liminal/ity” (2021) for solo cello by Chinese-American BMI Composer Award Sophia Jen Ouyang (b. 2001), and “A Crown for Sonia” (2008) for soprano, cello, and piano by Grammy® winning Chinese-American composer Zhou Tian (b. 1981).

 E4TT (soprano Nanette McGuinness, cellist Megan Chartier, pianist Margaret Halbig) will be joined by guests percussionist Haruka Fujii, violinist Lylia Guion and flutist Stacey Pelinka. The concert is free to attend at Cha Chi Ming Recital Hall in the Bowes Center at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (RSVPs recommended) and will also be livestreamed at no charge on SFCM’s Vimeo channel.

 

May 16, 2026: “El Tiempo Latine

E4TT will close our 18th Home Season with a concert celebrating the release of our sixth recording, featuring music by modern Latine composers, “El Tiempo Latine” (“Latin Time”). The program will feature works from the new album by Heinz Award in the Arts and Humanities recipient Gabriela Lena Frank (b. 1972); Pulitzer Prize winner Tania León (b. 1943, upper right); Opera America Discovery Grant composer Carla Lucero (b. 1964); four-time Latin Grammy® winner Claudia Montero (1962-2021); and  Miss Gay San Francisco 2024 and Miss Golden Gate 2023, Peruvian-American composer Brennan Stokes (b. 1990).

E4TT (soprano Nanette McGuinness, cellist Megan Chartier, and pianist Margaret Halbig) will be joined by coloratura soprano Chelsea Hollow and violinist Lylia Guion on this program. The concert will be presented live at the Center for New Music in San Francisco and livestreamed via E4TT’s YouTube channel.

ABOUT THE 2025/26 SEASON’S ARTISTS

Cellist MEGAN CHARTIER is “unafraid to display gutsy abandon” (South Florida Classical Review). She has performed internationally as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral cellist. Her current positions include core cellist of the Astralis Chamber Ensemble and principal cellist of Opera San Luis Obispo. Past positions include principal cellist of the Miami Symphony and the Pacific Region International Summer Music Academy; she has also recently performed with the San Antonio Symphony One Found Sound, Nu Deco Ensemble, and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. A semi-finalist in the 2017 PRISMA Concerto Competition, she won 1st prize in the Ann Arbor Society of Musical Arts’ 2015 Young Artist Competition and the 2015 Miami Music Festival Concerto Competition, conducted by Grzegorz Nowak of the Royal Philharmonic.

Multi-percussionist HARUKA FUJII has become one of the most prominent solo percussionists and marimbists of her generation. Since 2010 Fujii has performed as an artist of the Grammy® Award winning Silkroad Ensemble, founded by Yo-Yo Ma and serves as the Associate Artistic Director. She has appeared as a soloist with the SF Symphony, Munich Philharmonic, Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Nationale de Lyon, and the NHK Symphony Orchestra. She is a member of San Francisco Contemporary Music Players and Line C3 Percussion Group, also Utari Percussion Duo, a duet project with her sister Rika. A faculty member of San Francisco Conservatory of Music, she has been a frequent guest instructor at Juilliard Summer Percussion Seminar and is the founder and creative director of the nonprofit organization Nippon Kobo, a cultural event series introducing Music Culture from contemporary Japan.

Violinist LYLIA GUION has performed as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician in France and in the Bay Area. Her extensive orchestral experience includes the Orchestre Philharmonique of Radio-France (Paris) before moving to California in 1997, where she has performed with the Berkeley, Oakland, California, Marin, and Skywalker Symphony Orchestras, as well as Pacific Chamber Orchestra and Midsummer Mozart Festival. She also served as concertmaster with Livermore and Pocket Opera. An avid educator, she has taught in various music schools, coached youth orchestras, and organized community concerts. She is a Feldenkrais practitioner and currently applies this method at her private violin studio.

E4TT Pianist MARGARET HALBIG is in high demand as a collaborative artist in both the instrumental and vocal fields. She is currently associate chair of the Voice Department and principal vocal coach at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she also frequently collaborates with faculty and student singers and instrumentalists. Halbig was the pianist for Young Women’s Chorus of San Francisco from 2014 through 2023, and in 2013 was appointed collaborative piano coordinator of Interlochen Arts Camp. An advocate of new and contemporary music, she is the pianist and a board member of the new music collective Ninth Planet and has also. Halbig earned her DMA from UC Santa Barbara and performance degrees from the University of Missouri, Kansas City Conservatory, and University of Evansville, Indiana.

Coloratura soprano CHELSEA HOLLOW is known for her “soaring high range” and “stage panache” and has built a reputation for premiering new works including the roles of Helen Chavez in Dolores (2023) by Nicolas Benavides and Fenghuang in Hutong (2020) by Kui Dong. Hollow “has rewritten the book on the potential of musical activism," exploring ways to make new and traditional classical music exciting to new audiences. In 2023, she released her debut album “Cycles of Resistance” with Aerocade Music, featuring 22 commissioned works chronicling examples of human resilience in Mandarin, Dutch, Turkish, Arabic, Sanskrit, and Czech, in addition to English. In recognition of this work, she was invited by the United Nations Office of Human Rights to take part in a panel discussion on Art and Activism.

Soprano and E4TT co-founder and Artistic Executive Director NANETTE MCGUINNESS has performed in 13 languages on two continents in over 25 roles with the Silesian State (Czech Republic), Opera San Jose, West Bay Opera, Pacific Repertory Opera, Trinity Lyric Opera, and Livermore Valley Opera, among others. Solo concert engagements include Mahler’s Fourth Symphony, as well as Shéhérézade (Ravel), Nuits d’étés (Berlioz), Stabat Mater (Rossini), Requiem (Fauré), Gloria (Vivaldi), Lord Nelson Mass (Haydn), Vesperae Solennes (Mozart), and Handel’s Messiah and Solomon. McGuinness has been featured on seven albums with Centaur and Yuggoth Records, and her CD of music by 19th and 20th century women composers, Fabulous Femmes (Centaur)—was called “perfect for the song recital lover” by Chamber Music Magazine. She earned her PhD in Music at UC Berkeley and her MM in Vocal Performance from Holy Names College.

Flutist STACEY PELINKA enjoys performing a broad spectrum of classical music, especially contemporary chamber music. A longtime member of the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, and a founding member of the Eco Ensemble, Pelinka plays principal flute with SF Opera’s Merola Program productions and the Midsummer Mozart Festival, second flute with the Berkeley Symphony and the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, and piccolo with the Santa Rosa Symphony. She has performed with the SF Symphony and SF Opera as well as many other Bay Area ensembles. She currently teaches flute at UC Berkeley and UC Davis, and has taught Baroque Flute at the San Francisco Conservatory. Born and raised in the Bay Area, Stacey attended Cornell University and the SF Conservatory of Music. 

Pianist DALE TSANG earned her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Southern California, her MM from the University of Michigan, and her DMA from Rice University. She is a faculty member at Laney College, teaches an inspiring assortment of adult students, and serves as a competition adjudicator for a number of local and statewide piano competitions. A winner of numerous competitions and an active solo and chamber musician, she frequently performs locally and in Europe and Asia. As a core member of Ensemble for These Times, she championed 20th and 21st century music and collaborated in many commissions, premieres and international performances. She continues to enthusiastically disseminate the music of living composers.

Violinist MAYA VICTORIA (Charyyeva) began her musical education at the age of five, studying
piano and violin at a specialized music school in Ashgabat. In 2016, she was awarded first prize in Turkmenistan’s national competition for music school graduates. Maya continued her education at the Mimar Sinan University State Conservatory in Istanbul, where she performed with Camerata Saygun and 
took part in numerous concerts, festivals, and competitions as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Turkey. She completed her bachelor’s degree with honors in 2021. Now based in California, Maya is an active member of MTAC, teaches violin and piano, and regularly performs as a soloist and with various ensembles, including the Pacific Chamber Orchestra.
