The Delaware Symphony Orchestra (DSO) is pleased to announce the appointment of Michelle Di Russo as its next Music Director, following an extensive international search that began in 2023. Di Russo will begin her tenure in the 2025-2026 season, coinciding with the launch of the DSO’s milestone 120th season.

“We are delighted to announce Michelle Di Russo as the next Music Director of the Delaware Symphony Orchestra,” said Frank Clowes, President of the Board of Directors. “Her genuine presence, artistic command, and bold vision have inspired our musicians, staff, and board alike. We are excited to begin this next chapter under her leadership.”

Di Russo emerged as a clear choice during the DSO’s 2024-2025 season, which featured four strong candidates vying for the position. Di Russo’s time on the podium — and off — left a strong, positive impression with both musicians and audiences.

“From the time she first appeared with the DSO in 2024, it was obvious Michelle was something special,” said Dan McDougall, Principal Bassist for the orchestra. “I’m excited to see what her infectious energy brings to the DSO and her vision for the next chapter of our life. We eagerly look forward to audiences joining us on this journey.”

The selection of Di Russo reflects input from all facets of the organization — musicians, board, staff, and community — who participated in evaluating each candidate throughout the search process.

“I could not be prouder of our organization,” said J.C. Barker, Chief Executive Officer. “Over the past 22 months, this search has been a deeply collaborative, thoughtful, and inspiring process. Michelle Di Russo was the unanimous choice of both the Search Committee and our board, and we are thrilled to welcome her as we look to a bold new chapter — and beyond.”

Di Russo looks forward to officially stepping into the role at the DSO’s first Mainstage Series concert of the season on Friday, October 10, 2025.

“It is with great joy and deep gratitude that I accept this role,” says Di Russo. “From the first time I conducted this orchestra, I knew there was a special connection between us. I am inspired not only by the extraordinary talent of the musicians, but also the passion and dedication of the entire DSO team.”

“This orchestra is a cultural treasure of Delaware with limitless potential, and I’m honored to be entrusted with its future. I can’t wait to embark on this journey with the DSO and our vibrant Delaware community,” Di Russo continued.

Season subscriptions for 2025-2026 will be available in mid-May at DelawareSymphony.org or by calling 302-656-7442. Single tickets for all performances will go on sale Friday, August 1, 2025.
