Orchestra Lumos Presents Our Common World Featuring The World-Renowned Cellist, Yo-Yo Ma
STAMFORD, CT (April 24, 2025)— Orchestra Lumos is excited to welcome the incomparable cellist Yo-Yo Ma on May 24, 2025 and May 25, 2025 for the presentation of Our Common World. This concert will bring the 2024-2025 Orchestra Lumos Palace Series season to a thrilling close.
Yo-Yo Ma has been recognized as the preeminent cellist of our time, a global force and a leading advocate for the power of music and culture to bring us together. As one of the most cherished and celebrated artists in the world, he has worked tirelessly to promote culture’s essential role in society and to foster connections that stimulate our imagination and reinforce our humanity.
“It is a privilege to welcome Yo-Yo Ma to the Palace Theater to join us for these concerts,” said Michael Stern, Music Director of Orchestra Lumos. “There is nobody I can think of who communicates the pure joy of making music in live performances more than Yo-Yo Ma. He is more than a household name, one of the most iconic figures in American music today, and the pre-eminent cellist of our time. To me, more than anything, Yo-Yo Ma has always brought his unparalleled artistry to bear on what it means in our modern world to be a responsible citizen and leader. There could be no better musical partner than he to enliven this extraordinary program highlighting the profound relationship between humanity and the natural world."
The Orchestra Lumos 2024-2025 season celebrates music’s ability to connect our common humanity across generations and geographies. Our Common World with Yo-Yo Ma offers thought-provoking music reflecting the wonder of our natural environment, and how our conversation with nature embraces an imagination greater than our own.
Yo-Yo Ma will join Orchestra Lumos in Josef Haydn’s Cello Concerto No.1, a work that was presumed lost until 1961 when it was discovered in the Prague National Museum. He will also perform Antonín Dvorák’s Silent Woods, Dvorák’s farewell to his homeland in the old country as he embarked on his momentous trip to New York City and the New World.
The concert on Saturday, May 24 forms part of the Orchestra’s annual fundraising gala in aid of the musicians of Orchestra Lumos and its education programs. The Gala is generously sponsored by Philip Morris International.
These concerts will be Yo-Yo Ma’s first-ever performances with Orchestra Lumos, offering audiences the sensational opportunity to experience Yo-Yo Ma’s breathtaking musicianship in an unmissable finale to the season.
