“Smart instrumental writing… ferocious yet melodically supple passages”
– The New York Times
New York, NY (April 1, 2025) – This spring and summer bring a series of premieres for two new compositions by composer and flutist Allison Loggins-Hull: Grit. Grace. Glory. and Rhapsody on a Theme by Joni. As the last of three new works composed during Loggins-Hull’s tenure as Lewis Composer Fellow with The Cleveland Orchestra, her Grit. Grace. Glory. will receive its world premiere with the orchestra on May 8-10, 2025. The work will then be performed in its Canadian premiere with co-commissioners the Toronto Symphony Orchestra on June 4-7, 2025. Her Flute Concerto, Rhapsody on a Theme by Joni, will make its West Coast premiere with co-commissioner the Seattle Symphony and soloist Principal Flute Demarre McGill on June 19, 21, and 22, 2025. On June 20, 2025, Loggins-Hull herself will perform two shows featuring a remix of her Flute Rhapsody and additional works from her catalog of Afrofuturist compositions in the Seattle Symphony’s immersive Octave 9 performance space.
Grit. Grace. Glory., a musical story inspired by the people of Cleveland, will be performed in its world premiere by the Cleveland Orchestra at Cleveland’s Severance Music Center on Thursday, May 8, 2025 at 7:30pm; Friday, May 9, 2025 at 11:00am; and Saturday, May 10, 2025 at 8:00pm. While the stories and individuals that shaped this music are unique to Cleveland, the values and sentiments—grit, grace, and glory—are qualities that resonate universally. The work’s four movements, “Steel,” “Shoreline Shadows,” “Quip,” and “Ode,” pull upon core values and experiences that are historical as well as modern, from inside and outside Cleveland, evoking moving themes of strength, excellence, kindness, loyalty, and groundedness. The following partners and institutions are credited for their profound influence on the piece: The Cozad Bates House, The Cleveland School of the Arts, The Fatima Family Center, HK Bandura School, Karamu House, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, Global Cleveland, The Ukrainian Museum-Archives, Cleveland History Center, and The Cleveland Orchestra. Music Director Franz Welser-Möst conducts the program, which also includes Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 and Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 4.*
Gustavo Gimeno conducts the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in the Canadian premiere of Grit. Grace. Glory. at Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall on Wednesday, June 4; Thursday, June 5; and Thursday, June 7, 2025 at 8:00pm. The program also features Mozart’s “Jupiter” Symphony and Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major, with soloist Beatrice Rana.
On Thursday, June 19 at 7:30pm, Saturday June 21 at 8:00pm, and Sunday, June 22, 2025 at 2:00pm, the Seattle Symphony presents the West Coast premiere of Rhapsody on a Theme by Joni featuring conductor Emeritus Ludovic Morlot who will lead the Seattle Symphony and soloist Demarre McGill, the orchestra’s Principal Flute. This new work represents a collaboration amongst Loggins-Hull, The Knights chamber orchestra (co-commissioner), and flutist/vocalist Alex Sopp, herself an inspiration for the piece. Loggins-Hull shares,“[Sopp’s] voice and musicality often reminds me of the great Joni Mitchell, whose music has been a lifeline and a profound influence on me.” Through this melding of influences, including a third co-commissioner in the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the work draws on traditional styles and repertoire of virtuosic flute playing, while also leaning into modern and popular musical language. The Seattle Symphony program also includes works by Ravel and Gunther Schuller.
On Friday, June 20, 2025 at 7:00pm and 9:00pm, Loggins-Hull appears at the Octave 9: Raisbeck Music Center in Benaroya Hall to perform a remix of her Flute Rhapsody and other works from her catalog of Afrofuturist compositions. She will be joined by members of the Seattle Symphony in this Remix program, presented as part of the symphony’s New Music WORKS initiative.

About Allison Loggins-Hull
Celebrated as a musical “powerhouse” (The Washington Post), Allison Loggins-Hull is a composer, flutist, and producer whose work defies genre, from symphonic music to film scores, chamber and electronic music. Her music is often resonant with social and political themes, encompassing reflections on motherhood, Blackness, and identity. In her newest appointment, she will serve as Resident Artistic Partner to the New Jersey Symphony, for a two-year term beginning in September 2024.
Loggins-Hull's signature compositional style is distinguished by its unique sonic effects that echo contemporary music production techniques. Her works are profoundly influenced by Black American music, creating a vibrant and kaleidoscopic sonic palette. Thematically, her compositions are deeply rooted in the experiences of community, culture, and life, offering a rich and evocative musical narrative. Her artistic reflections on Black stories, music, and experience, have led to works aligned with Afrofuturism, a movement that imagines alternate realities and a liberated future viewed through the lens of Black cultures.
The 2024-2025 season marks Loggins-Hull’s last of three years as the Lewis Composer Fellow with the Cleveland Orchestra. Through programming, commissions, and community engagement, her work focuses the narratives and history of Cleveland through the prism of one of the world’s great orchestras, culminating in three world premieres: Can You See? for full orchestra, Legacy for string sextet, and a new work for full orchestra arriving in 2025. In a first for the Lewis Fellow’s quarter century history, Loggins-Hull performed alongside TCO musicians throughout her tenure. She concurrently begins her role with the New Jersey Symphony, where she will create new works for orchestra and contribute her unique perspective and experiences to the orchestra’s programming and community engagement.
Among her 2023-2024 highlights, Loggins-Hull performed in the world premiere of Ban, a composition for flute/piccolo/digital stomp box and string quartet that she composed for the Apollo Chamber Players’ Silenced Voices series, a musical statement against censorship. Recent and upcoming commissions include an orchestral work for the National Orchestral Institute, a Rhapsody for flute and orchestra to be performed by The Knights, Boston Symphony Orchestra, and Seattle Symphony in 2025, and new works for Flutronix with Third Coast Percussion (with whom she appears on the GRAMMY®-nominated album Perspectives) and The Cincinnati Symphony.
In recent years, Loggins-Hull performed with Lizzo at the 62nd GRAMMY Awards Show® and at the 2023 Met Gala, where she led an ensemble of flutists. As a performer on film scores, Loggins-Hull was co-principal flutist on the soundtracks for Creed III and Disney’s 2019 remake of The Lion King, working closely with Hans Zimmer. She was a co-producer of Nathalie Joachim’s celebrated album Fanm d’Ayiti, which was nominated for a 2020 GRAMMY® for Best World Music Album.
On the small screen, Loggins-Hull has been featured in an internationally broadcast ESPN Super Bowl commercial, as well as the 62nd annual GRAMMY Awards® Show and the Black Girls Rock! Awards Show. Continuing her work in film, Loggins-Hull composed the score for Bring Them Back, a 2019 award-winning documentary about the legendary dancer Maurice Hines directed by Jon Carluccio and executive produced by Debbie Allen.
Loggins-Hull is a former faculty member of The Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program and teaching artist at The Juilliard School’s Global Ventures. From 2018-2022, she served on the flute faculty of The John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University. Born in Chicago, she lives with her family in Montclair, New Jersey.
